BUILDING BY-LAWS
STANDARD CODE PROPOSAL CONSIDERATION DEFERRED The complaint that the adoption by the council of the proposed standard code of building by-laws would probably increase the cost of structural building in Dunedin by at least 10 per cent, was made bv Cr E. J. Smith at the meeting of the City Council last night. On Cr Smith's suggestion, the question was deferred for a fortnight so that members of the council could have an opportunity of studying the proposal further and could hear representations from the Institute of Architects and others vitally concerned. The proposal was one of great importance. Cr Smith said, and it was doubtful whether it would be wise to accept in full the standard code, part of which members had never seen, as it might not be entirely suitable for Dunedin conditions, and would almost certainly increase the cost of building. He thought it would be desirable to defer the question for a fortnight to enable further consideration to be given to it. _ ' „ The chairman of the Works Committee. Cr J. Wilson, said he had no objection to taking back the clause. As far as the architects were concerned, however, they had met the committee previously, and had been of no help at all. Nevertheless, the committee was anxious to avoid anv increase in the cost of building, and that aspect could be looked into before the council met again.
