REQUEST DECLINED

SUNDAY CONCERT APPLICATION ANOTHER PROPOSAL APPROVED A further application for a permit to hold a Sunday night concert in aid of the Army Queen's funds was before the Citv Council last night, and after discussion in committee the request was declined. Mr Arthur Macdonald supported the application en behalf of the Army Queen Committee and the Dunedin Orphans' Club, emphasising the fact that it was not intended to use the radio and that the programme would be selected with the greatest care. He also asked for permission to make a fixed charge for adm'ssion. The committee had the offer of the Empire Theatre for the occasion entirely free of charge. Mr J. Brown spoke in support of the application for permission to hold an " Olde English Fayre " in the Octagon on Saturday. October 19, with a temporary suspension of tram and other traffic for the period of the "Fayre." Mr Macdonald urged the need for some extraordinary effort of the kind to capture the imagination of the public. It was hoped that the council would give the committee possession of the whole of the Octagon, streets included, fox the whole day. This request was granted.
