V. 8., Tomahawk.—ln the absence of particulars of the policy it is impossible to say what the surrender value should be, but there.seems to be no reason why the sum you suggest should riot be correct. •Argument," Cromwell.—A British protectorate over Egypt was declared in 1914. but in 1936 Egyptian sovereignty was recognised by the Anglo-Egyptian treaty of alliance. The military occupation of Egypt was terminated,, but Britain undertook the defence of the country and was given the right of maintaining a garrison of 10,000 troops and 400 aircraft in the Suez canal, of using Alexandria and Port Said as naval-bases, and of moving troops across Egypt in the event of war or threat of war. Egypt is entirely self-governing but she has adopted an attitude of close friendihip towards Britain, and naturally there has been close co-opera-tion between the two countries in defence matters.
