RECORD POTATO YIELD

AVERAGE PER ACRE Potatoes weighing 141,105 tons were produced in the Dominion in the 193940 season, compared with 87,671 tons in 1937-38 and 146,785 tons in the previous season, according to the Abstract of Statistics. The past season's yield, from 20,033 acres on holdings of one acre or over, situated outside borough areas, averaged 7.04 tons an acre, the highest on record. Of the total 100,330 tons were table potatoes. 28.250 tons seed potatoes, and 12,525 tons pig potatoes. Producing 81,761 tons of the total, Canterbury was the leading district, with Wellington. 17,965 tons, and Otago. 11.486 tons, next. Growers were asked to specify the varieties harvested, and returns to hand, covering 50 per cent, of the total area, showed that Aucklander Short Top was the most popular, yielding 21,511 tons, at 7.07 tons an acre. Dakotas produced 15,170 tons, at 6.98 tons an acre, and Arran Chief 11.436 tons, at 10.20 tons an acre, the latter being the highest yield of any variety to the acre.
