RUGBY FOOTBALL

ARMY QUEEN GALA DAY MATCHES AT CARISBROOK UNIVERSITY DEFEATS PUBLIC SERVICE Saturday was Public Service Queen Carnival day at Carisbrook, and a crowd of aoout 2000 enjoyed three Rugby matches, the marching and playing of three bands, and a personal appearance of the Army Queen Miss Airini Grennell. Fortunately the showers and wind of Friday night had cleared away and there was bright sunshine for the programme The feature of the day* a match between University A and a team representing the public service, nrovided plenty of bright football The public service team was comprised mainly of prom inent First Grade players, and Uni versity owed its win by 21 points to 14 to the understanding which it had developed in a season's play Those who "followed" the jockeys in theii match against a Maori team had an unsuccessful day. but there was much fun before the Maoris filed off the winners by 16 points to 6. The Kaikorai School Bugle Band, the Kaikorai Band and the Dunedin High' land Pipe Band were in attendance, and the latter two heralded the ap pearance of the teams for the main match.

After she had been made acquainted with the players in what to them must have been a most pleasant fashion, Queen Airini kicked off—a worthy kick it was. too —and the teams settled down to business Like the teams in the earlier matches, they, too, played carnival football. The ball was thrown about freely and there was plenty of movement about the game. The University backs stagea some good passing, and had definitely the better of the first half. Tries were scored for them by Bennett and Peterson, and Foote kicked a penalty goal and converted two tries. Taylor and G. Murray scored good tries for Public Service and a conversion by Tavlor made the half-time score 13—8. Most of the second half went past before there was any scoring, and then several Public Service players took part in a bright rush which ended in a try by D. Murray. Berghan squared that off very quickly by swerving through for a try in the corner and Foote kicked a goal from the touchline. There was plenty of scoring now. and G. Murray charged over after Taylor had fielded the ball brilliantly. That made the score 18—14 in favour of University Berghan was playing a prominent part in preventing Public Service from making up the difference, and a few minutes before time Bennett scored his second try. making the final scorerUniversity A.. .. 21 points. Bright Curtain-raisers The first of the curtain-raisers was provided by the Macandrew Intermediate and the High Street-Caversham Schools' teams. The recently-formed Macandrew team won a brisk and bright game by 5 points to 3. Then came the Maoris and the Jockeys. The Jockeys took plenty of tosses and were in a hopeless position at the flnish. It was however, the strong control of several experienced footballers in the Maori side—H. A Steele. M. N. Paewai and L. Broughton, for example—which kent then team out in front. Right on time, the light-weight, Buckley, scored near the corner. Earlier in the game J. Mitchell had scored a try, so that the Jockeys finished with six points. Steele won an early sprint, and then Paewai scored a double, coming in at the finish each time after Steele had made the running. Broughton converted two tries and a happy match ended in favour of the Maoris by 16 points to 6. Mr C. Hoskins was the referee PIRATES WIN AT BALCLUTHA DEFEAT OF SOUTH OTAGO (Special ro Daily Times) BALCLUTHA, Sept. 22.
