VISIT TO SCHOOLS

MINISTER OF EDUCATION INTEREST IN INTERMEDIATE METHODS Visits were paid to the Dunedin North Intermediate School and to the new Macandrew Intermed : ate School yesterday morning by the Minister of Education, Mr H. G., R. Mason. The Minister is particularly interested in this type of education, and his inspection of both schools at work was thorough. ’ Mr Mason was met at the Dunedin North School by the principal (Mr O. H. E. Yates), Mr A. Campbell. M.L.C., and Mr Peter Neilspn, M.P. , After calling, at the Otago Education Board’s workshop, the party visited the Macandrew School, which the Minister had officially opened on Wednesday night. The principal (Mr A. M. Davidson) and members of the Otago Education Beard were able to show him- the school in full operation, and the Minister and Mrs Mason were the guests of the cookery class at morning tea. A feature of the school which aroused admiration was the library, which, although it is yet on a comparatively small scale, is being modelled on 'the Dunedin Public Library. A half-holi-day to the school to commemorate its official opening was a gesture which was popular among the pupils. The Minister’s next call was at the occupational centre in Moray place, where he moved among.the children at their various activities. The teacher (Miss J. C. B. Green) brought to his notice the need for the addition to the school of a house to accommodate country children and the children of city parents who wished to have them boarded. Mr Mason expressed sympathy with the proposal and asked that some more definite information should be placed before ■ him, A visit to the University of Otago and lunch at the Home Science Department with Professor A. G. Strong concluded the round, and the Ministerial party left in (he afternoon for Gore and Invercargill.
