OAMARU PLUNKET SOCIETY MONTHLY;MEETING Mrs Munro presided at the monthly meeting of the Oamaru branch of the Plunket Society. The Herbert sub-branch advised that a street produce stall would be held on Friday, November 1, the Oamaru branch assisting. The town nurse reported having made 160 visits to homes, and that 85 visits were made to the rooms, comprising 85 adults, 74 babies and 12 older children. Colds and influenza were prevalent in the district. The country nurse reported that 213 visits had been paid to homes and 45 visits to the rooms, comprising 23 adults and 22 babies. Colds were prevalent amongst babies and pre-school children.
PATRIOTIC GALA MEETING OF COMMITTEE ARRANGEMENTS WELL IN HAND Mr W. H. Brundell (chairman) occupied ) the chair at a meeting of the North Otago Patriotic Gala Committee on Wednesday night. It was decided to hold a badge day on Friday, September 27. the badges admitting holders to the gala at the racecourse on October 5. Mr H. B. Burton reported that the women’s organisations had agreed to undertake catering at the gala, supplying light lunch and afternoon tea. They would also conduct a produce stall, etc., and the girls of the Waitaki Girls' High School would make and sell sweets. It was decided to hold the drawing of the art union at the ball to be held at i tire Scottish Hall on October 15. , The secretary reported that arrangements were being made for a flight of aeroplanes to fly over the racecourse during the gala. . The offer of the Amateur Cycling Club to run a mile cycle race at the gala was accepted. , .. The secretary reported that to date the fat sheep drive had yielded £464 2s lOd. which was considered a very gratifying E. Coker, W. G. Williams. J. H. Main, H. B. Main. and W. H. Brundell were appointed a committee to allocate Space for stalls and games at the gala. KINEMA ENTERTAINMENTS MAJESTIC THEATRE “ Destry Bides Again.”—Telling a thrilling story of the West, " Destry Rides Again,” with Marlene Dietrich and James Stewart in the leading roles, forms the principal attraction to-night at the Majestic Theatre. The film deals with the early history of the West, and is replete with spectacular gun fights, hard riding, and scenes of strife and disorder in the days when mob law ruled the country. One of the features of the picture is an exciting fist fight between two women with the hero as referee. The supporting cast includes such well-known players as Una Merkel, Mischa Auer, Brian Donlevey, and Charles Winninger. A News. "Arrival of Second Echelon in England.” “ Ballets and Bullets,” and “ March of Time." go to make a fine programme. Saturday; “The Star Maker.”—There is nobody in the singing world as popular as Bing Crosbv, and he is seen and heard at his best in “ The Star Maker,” which is showing on Saturday. With his popularity at .the same peak as when he attained fame, he takes up the mantle of another age. There must be few who do not remember Gus Edwards, the famous vaudeville entertainer, and the sponsor of child stars. "The Star Maker” is the story of Edwards’s life. It is essentially a musical film, combining both the old and the new in songs, and some very popular numbers. Associated with Bing Crosby are such leading artists as Louise Campbell, Ned Sparks, and Linda Ware, the latter a sensational 14-year-old singing star. There is also Walter Damrosch and his Philharmonic Orchestra. Plans are at the Bristola. OPERA HOUSE “Those High Grey Walls.”—A daring drama of life and death behind prison walls, ** Those High Grey Walls,” will be shown to-night only at the Opera House. Walter Connolly, Onslow Stevens, and Iris Meredith are featured in the story of a country doctor who fights for his medical creed amidst the turbulent strife of a great prison. “Risky Business.”—First behind-the-scenes story of radio commentators and their quest for sensational news, “ Risky Business ” will be shown at the Opera House to-night only. George Murphyand Dorothea Kent head the cast. Episode 10 of “ The Green Hornet ” will also be shown. SHIPPING ACTIVITIES PORT OF OAMARU High Water.—September 20: 4.51 a.m. and 5.11 p.m. Coastal Movements The Karu is due on Monday to load for Wellington, Nelson and New Plymouth, via Timaru and Lyttelton. The Wainul will load to-day for Wellington, Napier and Gisborne, via ports. The Waipiata is due about Saturday, September 28, for Wellington and Auckland. via Timaru and Lyttelton. OAMARU LYRIC HALL SOCIETY ANNUAL MEETING Satisfaction was expressed with the year’s activities at the annual meeting of the Oamaru Lyric Hall Society recently, when Mr J. Mayfield presided. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr J. M. Forrester: vice-presidents, Messrs R. Mulligan and J. Mayfield: secretary and treasurer. Mr A. L. Familton; executive—-Messrs W. Kay presided over a good attendance at the monthly meeting Of the Past Grands’ Lodge on Tuesday night. Reports of the degree meetings held at Palmerston and Kakanui . were confirmed. P.G. Bro. Sherwin was invited to discuss with the Loyal Oamaru and Loyal Star of the North Lodges the working of the Past Grands’ Lodge. Some discussion took place regarding minor degree meetings and social entertainments. the matters being held over until the next meeting. PERSONAL At the annual meeting of the Oamaru Tennis Club on Wednesday night, the president (Dr R. J. S. Fitzgerald) congratulated Mr S. G. McDougall on his election to the presidency of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association. Lieutenant J. S. Forrest, son of Mr and Mrs A. C. Forrest, Exe street, Oamaru, and an ex-pupil of the Waitaki Boys’ High School, who has been resident in Sydney, has gone on overseas service as a member of an infantry battalion of the Australian Imperial Forces. LAWN TENNIS OAMARU CLUB ANNUAL MEETING Dr R. S. J. Fitzgerald (president) occupied the chair at the annual meeting of the Oamaru Tennis Club on Wednesday night. Moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, the president stated that five members Of the club had joined the military forces. They would be a distinct loss to the club, and had been elected honorary members during the time they were on active service. Despite adverse conditions, a successful year had been experienced, and the senior team had won the senior competition. Election of Officers The election of officers resulted as follows;—President. RUGBY FOOTBALL SOCIALS FOR LOWER GRADES Athletic Club Members of the Athletic Football Club senior teams and the committee entertained the club’s Third and Fourth Grade teams at a social on Wednesday night. The president of the club (Mr D. Burns) presided. The toast list honoured was:— “The King”; " The North Otago Rugby Union ” (Mr R. Young—Mr M. F. Woodward); “The Referees” (Mr R. Turvey— Mr J. Knowles—Mr D Burns). x , ~ During the evening the president of the North Otago Rugby Union (Mr M. F. Woodward) presented the North Otago Times Cup to the captain of the Fourth Grade team (S. Campbell). The trophies won by members of the Fourth Grade team were presented by Mrs Burns as follows:—Best, back (Mr V. Doran’s cup). G. Blacklow; most improved back (Mr W. Budd's cup), S. Campbell: best forward (Mrs Burns’s cup), H. Allington; most improved forward (Mr S. Browne’s cup), L Doran; most consistent trainer (Mr J. James’s cup). I. Tavendale. Mr R. Elder presided at a dinner at the Bungalow Tea Rooms for members of the Excelsior Fourth Grade team. The presentation of trophies was made by Mr Elder as follows:—Best forward (Mr “Tad” Campbell’s cup), W. Watson; player who has done the most for his team on and off the field (Mr E. A. Laney’s cup), A, Ross; best back (Mr K. Elder’s cup), V. Irvine. The toasts honoured were:—“The King”: “The Excelsior Fourth Grade Team ’’ (Mr R. Elder —Mr F. Arscott. captain); “The Coach” (Mr J. Ross—Mr E. Goodall). Mr A. Low. representing the North Otago Rugby Union, gave a short address to the players. JOHN BULLEID AND CO. ANNUAL MEETING The twenty-eighth annual meeting of shareholders of Messrs John Bulleid and Co.. Ltd., was held on Wednesday night, the chairman of directors (Mr D. Findlay) presiding. Moving the adoption of the directors report, Mr Findlay referred to the general state of trade. Notwithstanding the effects of the import restrictions which had made it difficult to obtain certain classes of goods, the stocks had been kept up to average size, and as far as possible the wide range of most articles had advanced, thus requiring a greater amount of capital for stock-in-trade. Every effort had been made to keep down the selling prices compatible with the increased cost. The turnover was larger than in the previous year, and the net profit also showed an improvement, but this was more than absorbed by the increased taxation, amounting to £9OO, equal to 37 per cent, of the profit. Full provision for depreciation on buildings, plant, and fittings, amounting to £4Ol 13s Id. had been made, and allowance had also been made for bad and doubtful debts. Mr Findlay made special reference to the large increase in the cash sales, showing that customers had taken full advantage of the cash discount system of Is in the £. During the year, the rebates on cash purchases amounted to £l7l more than for the previous year. The directors’ recommendation to pay a dividend of 6 per cent, on the preference shares, and 5 per cent, on the ordinary shares, was agreed to. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the directors, manager, secretary (Miss I. Amies), and staff for their services during the year. In acknowledging this appreciation, Mr Findlay spoke of the loyalty and co-operation of the members of the staff, all of Whom had shown a keen interest in their duties and in the welfare of the business. ITEMS OF INTEREST IN AND ABOUT TOWN Ewe Hogget Competition—Entries for the annual ewe hogget competition conducted by the North Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association close on Tuesday. October 1. The classes and conditions will be the same as formerly, and fudging will be completed as soon as possible after closing date of entries. Oamaru Boating Club. —The Oamaiu Boating Club held Us first committee meeting on Wednesday night, the president (Mr D. Martyn) presiding. Opening day was set down tentatively for November 2, and it was decided that the boathouse be open for the “ Learn-to-row campaign on October 12. Duntroon Red Cross. —There was a fair attendance at the weekly euchre party of he Duntroon branch of the Red Cross, held on Wednesday night. The nmes were won by Mrs E.
