CRICKET

OLD BOYS’ CLUB SUPPORT FOR ONE-DAY MATCHES An instruction was given by the annual meeting last night of the High School Old Boys’ Cricket Club to its delegates to the annual meeting of the Otago Cricket Association to support a proposal to introduce one-day cricket as a temporary measure in the First and Second Grades of the association’s competitions. It was considered that military training requirements upon the time of many players would be an additional handicap that could easily make two-day cricket much too involved to be successful. The meeting, which was attended oy about 20 members, with Mr W. R. Brinsley in the chair, also discussed fully the association’s Endowment Fund scheme, and decided to support the continuation of the scheme. Appreciation was expressed of the work of those who had given the fund such a promising start, and it was argued that the fund had such valuable potentialities that it merited the making of a special effort in spite of the other difficulties being faced by clubs A recommendation to the association executive was carried that ,if two-day matches should be continued playing hours should be from 1.30 o’clock to 6 o’clock instead of to 6.30 Maintaining the Game

The annual report reviewed a ’* very difficult but enjoyable ” season, and mentioned that the trophy winners were G. R. Dickinson (first eleven), A. Manson (second eleven), and V. G. Leader (special trophy for best all-round performance) Mention was made by the chairman, when he was moving the adoption of the report, of the fact that the club had lost heavily through members joining up with the services The club was proud of them, and wished them a quick and safe return Those who were yet at home had a duty to them to keep the game going as briskly as possible until they came back Another heavy loss had been caused by the departure to Wellington of Mr G. R. Dickinson one of the outstanding cricketers in the club and the province over a period of years The financial position was fair, added Mr Brinsley, who wished the club and cricket generally a successful season. The motion was seconded by Mr L A. Giles and carried Office-bearers
