NOVEL COMPETITION PROPOSED “THE UGLIEST MAN ” MOCK COURT TO-MORROW At a meeting of the Navy Queen Food Group Sub-committee held m Tuesday, Mr A. A. Paape, chairman, submitted a proposal to hold an ugliest man competition! Mr Paape said that a similar competition in the North Island had been highly successful, and he was sure it would receive generous support locally. It would also cause many humorous situations, which Was a good thing at the present time. It was Unanimously agreed to make the nomination fee ss. Anyone maynominate a friend or foe by paying the; fee Any number of nominations Will be received, and then six finalists will be selected to go to the vote. A charge of 3d a vote will be made, and the man securing the largest number of votes will be declared the winner. A subt committee has been appointed to go into details for the successful carrying out of the competition. It was also agreed to offer a cash prize of 10s fid to the purchaser of a lucky ticket in the house art union during the week ending September 3,0 The ticket must be purchased from one of the food group sellers. This will tend to further the sale of art union tickets. Particulars are advertised.

To-morrow's Features Two big Navy Queen features have been arranged for to-morfoW, ’ and judged from the enthusiasm displayed by the many hundreds of helpers concerned, “fun of the funds;" will reach, the highest pitch yet. ' ;,J-, i „; The principal attraction will be the holding of the mock court at the corner of Princes and Dowling streets, near the Excelsior Hotel. The Commercial Travellers’ Asspciation is organising this function. With their usual thoroughness, the members have completed all details, even to the estab-. lishing of their own police force-just in case a few delinquents require force to bring them before the presiding judge. . Summonses have already been issued, and it is rumoured that members of the City Council will be required to step into the “box" to defend themselves against the charge of “ refusing permission for Sunday concerts.” The other attraction will be the laying of a copper trail. The trail is to start from Manse street and will extend on both sides of the mam thoroughfare as far as Frederick street. AIR FORCE QUEEN TOUR OF NORTH OTAGO The tour of North Otago being carried out by the Air Force Queen (Miss Mary Pratt) and her party was continued yesterday, when a reception was tendered to the visitors at the Waitaki Girls’ High School, A guard of honour was provided by the pupils of the school, and the party was received by the principal (Miss J. B. Wilson) in the Assembly Hall. After Miss Pratt had been introduced to the school, songs were contributed by Miss Margaret Pratt and Miss Doris Wilson, and Miss Alwyn Nichol (Countess of Waikouaiti) gave a recitation. • In the afternoon the party visited the Waitaki Boys’ -High School, being re-’ ceived in the Hall of Memories by the principal (Mr F. Milner), who extended a cordial welcome. Later, the members of the party were entertained to afternoon tea by the Oamaru Women’s Club Miss Gillespie, the acting-presi-dent of ;the club, assuring Miss Pratt of 1 the members’ warm support.:;. -- A short musical, programme was given. To-day the party will proceed to Kurow, later going oh to .Tarras and Hawea Flat, where receptions have been arranged. ARMY:; QUEEN VISIT TO GREEN ISLAND CONCERT FOR SOLDIERS A concert promoted by the Green Island Soldiers’ Farewell,. Committee was held in The Green Island Town Hall last night to raise fuhds for an appropriate farewell for local soldiers who are shortly leaving for camp. During the evening Miss Airini Grennell, the army queen, attended by her lords and ladies in waiting, arrived, and was introduced by Mr A. J, Gordon, chairman of the Green Island Patriotic Social Committee, who spoke of the objects of the queen carnival, and emphasised ■ the necessity for the residents to give it their keenest support and thus" assist in the rehabilitation of Otago soldiers after the war. The audience was also addressed by Mr G, W. Lane, chairman of the Army Queen Committee, and by Mr H. L. Paterson. Miss Grennell then thanked the people of Green Island for their reception and sang the Maori Battalion song, which was received with loud applause. Items were contributed by the Green Island Band, and by Miss A M. George and Miss S. C. Moreland, Miss Beverley Wix, Miss Robertson, Miss 0 Dunwoodie, Miss Audrey Edmond, Mr O'Neill, the Misses Stuart, Miss M Kerr. Mr. Scott, Miss Smellie, Misses M. and L. Adam, Bandmaster G. Christie. Masters Blair Thomson. Arthur Berry. Murray Edmond and Jack Geddes, Miss Garland. Miss Duncan, and Miss Gwen Cox.,
