OPPORTUNITIES FOR INVASION GRADUALLY LESSENING (By Wireless) ■'•-'' DAVENTRY, Sept. 17. In an interview with press correspondents yesterday. Colonel Knox. America's Secretary of the Navy, stated that he was cheerful about the British chances of defeating Germany, whose opportunities for sue cessful invasion were gradually lessening. To make her invasion, he said, Germany must first destroy Britain's air power, and this she has not done. Her initial three to one advantage is being diminished and she is losing more men than the British, whose pilots are returning to fight again. HURRICANE HITS NOVA SCOTIA COMMUNICATIONS CUT OFF MONTREAL, Sept. 17. (Received Sept. 18, at 2 a.m.) A bad hurricane hit Halifax, Nova Scotia, which is cut off from communication with the rest of Canada. Surface winds reaching 70 miles an hour are reported. SURVEY OF DEFENCES AMERICA AND CANADA OTTAWA, Sept. 17. (Received Sept. 18, at 2 a.m.) The Canadian and United States joint Defence Board announced its decision to conduct an immediate and elaborate survey of west coast defences, including the north-west-ern States, British Columbia and Alaska. The Canadian members of the board will leave by air for the coast to-morrow for a tour of inspection. AUSTRALIAN AID DIRECT GIFT OF £500,000 MELBOURNE, Sept. 17. (Received Sept. 18, at 2 a.m.) The Commonwealth Government is sending £soo,ooo'direct to London for the relief of air raid victims. The subscriptions in Victoria now total £150,000, and money is still coming in at a fast rate.
