The secretary of the Foxton Racing Club (Mr J. Newton) recently received advice from the manager of the Commercial Bank of Australasia, Palmerston North, that a closed envelope, the contents of which were unknown, was being held by the bank on behalf of the club. The envelope had been lodged with the bank for safe keeping on March 6, 1885, and the bank manager desired to know what the wishes of the club were in connection with the package. Mr Newton wrote asking that the envelope be forwarded to the club, and on its arrival it was found to contain a policy covering the old grand stand at the racecourse for £IOO against fire. The existence of the policy was unknown to members, and, of course, was of no value. The policy was written by the "Equitable Insurance Association of New Zealand," with head office at Dunedin, and was made out to Mr J. R. Russell, original proprietor of the Manawatu Herald. The expiry date was shown as January 20, 1888. Mr Russell was at the time secretary of the Foxton Racing Club.
