AMATEUR ATHLETICS

MEETING OF OTAGO CENTRE The monthly meeting of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association was held last night. Mr- C. W. Clark presiding. The . secretary of the New Zealand Council wrote*advising that it had been decided that in the case of the, Roxburgh Club, which had gone into recess Cor the duration of the war. the fees Dayable by it to the council had been waived. In the case of the Alexandra Club, however, it was held that as the club had the necessary funds it should be called upon to pay its dues for the year.—lt was decided that, as the Alexandra Club had handed over its funds to the Government, the centre would ,oav its dues for the year. In response to the centre's inquiry, the secretary of the council advised that a handicapper could alter his declared handicaps only in the event of the postponement of any race or event or in order to " penalise" an athlete tn accordance with the rules. In this case it was to be noted that the penalties could be enforced only for handicaps in which the athlete might compete " during the four days following such wins." and that the penalties did not apply to wins on the same day at the same meeting. It followed that the handicapper of the recent TemukaTimaru Road Race was not in order if he altered his declared handicaps Noted. Mr Fellick Sanders wrote stating that he had been approached by the High School Old Girls' Basketball Club, which was anxious to take up athletics this seeson but did not wish to affiliate until it was ascertained what support would be forthcoming.—Gratification was expressed at the possibility of a new club bein? formed, and it was agreed that the girls should be encouraged to sffiliate as a club. A. R. Duff was granted a transfer from the Otago University Club to the Civil Service Club.
