AM VICTORY

STRENGTH OF R.A.F. SURPRISE FOR ENEMY AMERICAN PLAUDITS (By Wireless) DAVENTRY, Sept. 16. The Nazis have not yet managed to explain theii crushing defeat of yesterday. The German radio made an announcement that the concentration of defence fighters over London had come as a surprise to the German High Command. German air forces made another attempt this morning, and some penetrated inland from the southeast coast. Observers said that they were flyu. < so closely that their wings appeared to be almost touching. They were met with deadly anti-aircraft fire which broke up the formations, and then they had to face the fighter aircraft, which bustled most of them back home. There were three short alarms in London during the night. There appear to have been no incidents. The British air victory has been featured in the American press. The New York Herald-Tribune says: “ The German suicidal mass attacks to beat the British defences have again broken out. but the bulwarks of • civilisation are still holding out. In the attacks some planes were turned back before they ever got to their destinations, and those that did arrive over London found the Spitfire squadrons tearing into (hem, but even then their ordeal was not over, for the Hurricanes chased them back on their way home.” The New York Times says that aJJ indications are that the British still hold the upper hand, and there is no sign of weakening. Reference is also made to the importance of the British raids over Germany.
