WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

Kepurta of meetings ol branches are requested hut they should be furnished promptly, tor the publication of reports that are not supplied within a week from the date of the meeting cannot be promised.

The Karitane Institute met on Thursday, Mrs Taiaroa presiding. The motto was: “Our yesterdays follow us, they constitute our life, and they give character and force and meaning to our present deed”; and the roll call, “A window-cleaning lint.” The competitions resulted: —Nut and fruit toffee —Mrs Rumble 1, Mesdames Fricker, Tubman, and Kennedy (equal) 2. Bloom—Mrs Wyeth 1, Mrs Tubman 2. Money was collected for soldiers' parcels, and each member was asked to give one shilling for war purposes. Mrs Wilkin,on spoke on “Pioneer Women.” A presentation was made to Mrs Tubman (past president) in recognition of her services. The hostesses were Mrs Olsen and Mrs Patterson.

It was “ gardening day ” at the monthly meeting of the Warepa Institute, held on Tuesday last, and the room was gay with spring flowers. Mrs H. B. Flett presided. The roll call was “A gardening hint,” and the motto “A sunny temper gilds the edge of many a dark cloud.’' Mesdames Flett and J. F. Ayson demonstrated on the making of coal flowers, and an attractive and instructive demonstration on the making of bouquets and wreaths was given by Miss M. Heckler, who, on the motion of Mrs O. M. Cross, was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The Golden Thread talk was given by Miss D. Petrie, on the Vfe of Doi’othy Donaldson, the blind and deaf poet, and extracts were read "rom her book. “My Silent World.” Mrs Shanks had arranged an amusing guessing competition. “ Balclutha Businessmen,” which was won by Miss Petrie, Another competition for a bowl of polyanthus resulted: Mrs Shanks 1, Mrs Flett 2. The hostesses were Mesdames G. ’ McQuade and G. R. Ayson and Miss G, Cross.

The monthly meeting of the Windsor Institute was held on Thursday last, Mrs Rawcliffe presiding. The motto was “ Kind words can never die, but they must be spoken before they can live.” and the roll call. “A song and its memoi-ies.” The Golden Thread

speaker was Mrs Leggett. The competitions resulted:—Three rock cakes —Mesdames Malcolm, Stevenson. Rawson and Bryan (equal) 1; bloom—Mrs Malcolm 1, Mrs Stevenson 2. Another competition presented by Mrs Bryan was won by Mrs Leggett. It was decided to give £1 to the war fund, the same amount towards Christmas parcels for the lepers. The hostess was Mrs Wilson.

The Waitati Intitule held its monthly meeting on Tuesday last. Mrs Ferguson presiding. The motto was “ Our best always,” and the roll call “A verse of poetry.” Mrs Nelson, of Sawyex-s’ Bay, gave interesting demonstrations on the making of coffee grounds and the making of brooms from cabbage leaves, and she also spoke on the many uses of flour bags. A bring and- buy sale was held to increase the institute funds, and sufficient money was collected for three Christmas parcels for soldiers overseas. A competition, “ Hand-made novelty,” resulted:—Mrs Blaeklaws 1, Mrs Ferguson 2. The hostesses were Mesdames Connor, Heather and Munro.

The Dunbaok Institute held its monthly meeting on Wednesday last, Mrs E. Stanley presiding. The motto was “ Content and loss bring peace and joy" (Burns), and the roll call. "A line of Scottish song or poetry." As it was “ grandmother’s day" posies were presented to all the grandmothers. The Rev. Mr French, of Palmerston. gave an interesting talk on Robert Burns, illustrating it with song and readings from the poet’s poems. Songs were given during the afternoon by Mesdames Pearson. Chaston and Dallard and Mr French, and charades under the leadership of Mrs William Mclntosh, completed a pleasant afternoon. Mrs Bell returned thanks on behalf of the grandmothers. Two large boxes of clothing for the refugees were forwarded during the month and 11 Christmas cakes and two Christmas parcels have been sent to soldiers of the district. A competition resulted:—Mrs Titterton 1. Miss O. Jewett 2. The hostesses were Mesdames Titterton. Farquarson and Mangan and McLew. APPOINTED TO NAVY FIRST WOMAN DOCTOR The appointment of the first woman doctor to the Royal Navy was recorded in the London Gazette last month in the following announcement - Attached R.N.V.R.—Mrs Genevieve Rewcastle, M. 8., Ch. 8.. granted relative rank of Surgeonlieutenant, May 21, 1940. Mrs Attracta Genevieve Rewcastle Is the wife of Mr C S. Rewcastle, K.C., and their home is in Holmesdale road, Kew Gardens Richmond, Surrey. Some years before her marriage she was assistant school medical officer at Sheffield. At that time Mr Rewcastle was contesting an election in the Hallam Division as a Liberal. Dr Candon (as Mrs Rewcastle then was) met Mr Rewcastle and three years later they were married.
