Boyd, of Stirling, who will leave shortly to take up residence at Hastings was the guest of honour at an afternoon function given recently by the Busy Bees at the home of Mrs Davey. English, Dominion president of the League of Mothers, arrived from Auckland yesterday on a visit to the Otago and Southland branches, and is the guest of Mrs E. N. Mernngton. of “ The Lodge,’’ Knox College, during her stay in Dunedin. ¥ ¥ ¥ The Masonic Hall. Milton, was the scene of a happy party on Saturday night when about 70 guests attended a “ kitchen ” evening given by friends of Miss Winnie Buchanan in honour of her approaching marriage to Mr William Lyall, jun. Dancing was enjoyed for the greater part of the evening and was interspersed with songs by Miss Alma Wilson and Master T. Young, Highland dancing by Miss Edith Buchanan and bagpipe selections by Mr C. Flett. ¥ ¥ ¥
The monthly meeting of the Ravensbourne branch of the League of Mothers was held on Thursday last. Mrs Cairney presiding. Extracts were read from the “ Pioneer Women (compiled by the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union) by Mesdames Cairney, Hodge, Donaldson and Condon. Mrs Pickersgill read a poem by Mr F. Mitchell entitled “The Pioneer Mothers of New Zealand.” Items were given by Mrs Dawson and the league choir. A new member. Mrs Collier, was welcomed. The thought for the month, sent in bv Mrs Hodge, was “Look back and give thanks; look forward and take courage.”
The Lancashire and Yorkshire Society held its monthly social on Saturday, when an excellent programme was given, interspersed with community singing and games. The items were as follows: —Songs, Mr Romenl (“The Ringers” and "Old Barty”): songs, Mr Wentworth (“Shipmates o Mine” and “For England’’): songs, Miss Errington (“Morrei” and “ There’s a Land ”); songs. Miss Ray Stubbs (“Through Darkness to the Dawning ” and “ Homeland ”); songs. Miss Ledgerwood (“Golden Days” and “Come”); piano-accordion solos. Mr Dixon: pianoforte solos, Mr A. Dixon; selection of jokes, Mr Longworth; dances. Misses June and Betty Applegate; Yorkshire reading. Mrs Walker.
In a hall beautifully decorated with spring flowers a large number of Stirling residents met on Thursday last to do honour to Mrs J. P. Boyd, who will leave soon to reside at Hastings. MrsC. Anderson welcomed the guest and presented her with a shoulder spray and Elizabeth Boyd with a posy. A programme was presented as follows:Vocal solos, Mrs S. Mosley and Miss J. Andrews; Miss M. Rutherford; a charade: a choir contest; and an “ autograph ” competition. Mrs Anderson, presenting Mrs Boyd with a monetary gift, expressed the best wishes of those present, and their keen appreciation of one who had given liberally of her time and talents whenever they were needed. Mrs Caldwell voiced the regret of the basketball team in losing its leader and also presented a gift. Musical honours followed. * * *
Superstitibns were challenged by the prefects and senior girls of St. Hilda s Collegiate School at their annual dance. The function was held on Friday. September 13—both ominous dates—and “ bad luck ” streamers were hunt? from an open umbrella, and boughs of wattle decorated the walls To counteract such evil influences, black cats, horse shoes, wish-bones and fourleaved clovers were well to the fore. Masses of spring flowers were every-s where and made a bright frame for the stage. A delightful sunper, prepared by the Sixth Form Housecraft class, was served in the refectory The guests included Mrs Blackmore. Mr and Mrs Buttle. Mr and Mrs Chisholm. Mr and Mrs Lang. Mr and Mrs Oliver Cox. Dr West. Misses Morton and McQuilkan. members of the staff and their partners, prefects from Columba College and the Otago Girls’ High School, and nrefects and senior boys from the Otago Boys' High School King’s High School, and John McGlashan College. * * *
Residents of Arrowtown and district had an opportunity of saying farewell to Mr and Mrs P. J. Mcßride and family at a social held in the Athenaeum Hall last week prior to their leaving for Dunedin. The Mcßride family has lived in Arrowtown for the past 15 years, and had taken a prominent part in its social life. The services of Mrs Mcßride in cases ’ of sickness have endeared her to the community Mr Mcßride has been a keen bowler and his son Jim has been a prominent member of the Football Cricket and Lawn Tennis Clubs. During the evening Mayor (Mr w James) spoke in eulogistic terms of the good qualities of Mr Mcßride and his three sons all of whom engaged m various sports The sons had enlisted for active service two bavins been accepted Mr James handed Mr Mcßride, an envelope containing a.sum of money as a token of the esteemin which the Mcßride family is held ine presentation was followed by musica. honours. A Belgian soldier and a Polish girl in France were married over a table, two legs of which were in France and two in Belgium. The couple could not wed in either country, but the frontier marriage was considered legal.
The new repertory production, “ Quiet Wedding,” which will open on Wednesday. September 25. will mark the first appearance in the society’s major productions of no fewer than six members. These are Mesdames Grace Douglas. Audrey Stevenson. Jean
Hasell. Misses Pat Fraser, Biilie Loan, and Dr E. M. Nanson. The annual meeting of the Travel Club will be held in the Crawford Lounge on Thursday at 8 p.m. A musical programme has been arranged, and moving pictures will be shown by the Group Travel Association. The secretary would be glad if members would notify of their intention to be present.

The Music Circle of the Otago Women’s Club met on Friday evening Miss Emilie Logie was in the chair and the programme of chamber music had been arranged by Mrs H. C Campbell, who prefaced each item with illuminating comments on its composition and interpretation. The programme was as follows:—Trio in G major (Mozart)—Mrs H. C. Campbell (piano), Mr Rees McConachy (violin), Mr Alexander Blyth (’cello); Sonata for violin and piano (Cesar Franck), Mrs H. C. Campbell and Mr Rees McConachy; 'cello solos—“ Kol Nidrei ” (Max Bruch). “Apres un Reve (Faure), “Berceuse” (Faure)—Mr Alexander Blyth. accompanied by Miss Marion Jeffery; Phantasie Trio (Pram? Bridge)—Mrs H. C. Campbell, Mr Rees McConachy. and Mx Alexander Blyth Mrs Merrington. on behalf of the members of the Music Circle, moved a hearty vote of thanks to the performers.
The Waitaki High School Old Girls' Association (Dunedin branch) held a pleasant evening in the Tudor Lounge of the Savoy on Thursday last. Mrs Harre. president welcomed seven new members, and also read greetings from the Oamaru Association. Members were advised that voluntary donations had so far supplied seven Christmas parcels for the soldiers the money hav mg been handed to the Community Sing Committee. A collection box was placed before members for any further donations, The president also advised members that wool was available for knitting for men or the minesweepers, and all were asked to help with this work. Members took part in a competition, the winner being Miss Marion Fyfe. The following hour was spent listening to a travel talk by Mrs H. F Sincock on her trip to the East. In the time at her disposal. Mrs Sincock was able to cover only six weeks of her tour, which included visits to Sydney Melbourne, Brisbane, Thursday Island Manila. Hongkong, and various other ports of call. After supper. Miss A. M Budd, on behalf of the association, thanked Mrs Sincock, and expressed the hope that members -would have the pleasure of hearing of the rest of her trip at some future date. As the result of a meeting held last week to form a Women’s Committee in support of the Navy Queen Mrs R. S. Black was appointed chairwoman, Mrs Douglas Barton, deputy chairwoman, and Miss L. Fraser, secretary. Mrs Stewart Macpherson and Miss Kathleen Greenslade will act as delegates to the central Navy Committee. The meeting was convened by Mrs J. Sutherland Ross.
The monthly meeting of the Queens, town branch of the P.W.M.U. was held on Friday last, and was presided o''er by Mrs D. K. Boyd, who gave a talk on the mission effort throughout New Zealand. It was intimated that a social would be held on September 18 to aid church funds. A missionary letter was read, and also the first chapter of “Our Missionaries at Work.”
An enjoyable card and mah-jongg evening was given on Saturday by Mr and Mrs J. D. Dass at their home. “Poplar Grove,” Clyde. Some 40 residents attended and as a result the local Queen Carnival Ball Fund was augmented by a very useful sum.
