FIGHTER FUND
CONTRIBUTION OF £250 TUAPEKA COUNCIL'S ACTION A unanimous decision to contribute £250 for the purchase of fighter aeroplanes for Britain was made by the Tuapeka County Council at its meeting at Lawrence yesterday. A suggestion that the donation should be £50(1 was- deferred, as it was considered that' there would no doubt be.further op-, portunities of making contributions. Moving.that the sum of £250 should be given, the chairman, Mr 1. S. Thompson, said the county Jvas in a very satisfactory financial position. The war was going to be a long and bitter one, and every penny available would be required,. as, with the. intensification of aerial warfare, the wastage b:t planes would'be terrific; There were many calls on the council's funds, but the important thing was to win. the war first. v The motion was seconded by Cr J. Bennetts, and supported by all other members. "It is true that these contributions will not get us one fighter that would not otherwise be produced." said Cr E. H. Murfjey, " but the mere fact that" the contribution is entirely voluntary will have a good effect. I'll bet Hitler and his coterie would be glad if any of the States he has annexed gave him one plane in this way. They, are'no doubt giving- them under cbmpulsion, but this is a different thing,;, and I wish that more of the funds be-; ing collected in New Zealand to-day were for the same purpose."
