COUNCIL'S MONTHLY MEETING The chairman (Mr R. S. Thompson) presided at the monthly meeting of the Tuapeka County Council at Lawrence yesterday. Other members present were: Crs E. H. Murney, W. Cameron, J. Bennetts, R. G. Cotton, I. D. Revie, J. George, and R. C. Hall. Financial Position The clerk (Mr R. F. Batchelor) reported that the receipts for the month were £1587, and that accounts for payment amounted to £2441. The credit balance at the bank at August 31 was £1269, with the addition of £SOO in fixed deposit. The chairman of the Finance Committee (Mr I. D. Revie) added that there was also £ISOO on fixed deposit in the Plant Renewal Fund. Main Highway Subsidies The district representative of the Main Highways Board (Mr P. Keller) advised that the following amounts have been provided for in the Main Highways Estimates for 1940-41, all subsidies at the rate of £3 for £l: Rae's Junction-McNab, £9OO for maintenance; Edievale-Rae's Junction, £6B for improvements to corners; Bal-clutha-Lawrence, £577, maintenance; Willowbank-Matheson's corner, £450, maintenance; Willowbank-Heriot, £SO, sealing; Tapanui Railway Station highway, £45, maintenance; RoxburghMiller's Flat, £495. maintenance; Wai-pahi-Po'mahaka, £75. maintenance: Miller's Flat Railway Station highway. £53, maintenance; Kelso-Tapanui. £l2O. maintenance. Appeal Declined The appeal for financial help from the Dunedin branch of the New Zealand Crippled Children Society was declined. Road Improvements With respect to the council's application for assistance in the forming and metalling of the Chinaman Flat road, the district engineer of the Public Works Department, Mr Keller, advised that unless the council was prepared to carry out the work in the ordinary way and collect subsidy on completion, the work would have to stand over until more favourable conditions prevailed.—The chairman said arrangements had now been made to have the work done in the ordinary way. The Home Guards During a discussion on the Home Guard organisation it was pointed out that the local bodies were concerned only with the enrolment of members Enrolment forms would be available shortly, and steps would be takeni bv members of the council to distribute these to points in their localities where they could be obtained by persons wishing to join.
