CLEVERNESS DISTRUSTED
Talking on England and the English character, Lady Violet Bonham-Carter touched in a recent broadcast on some national faults and weaknesses. "We are intellectually lazy," she said, " and inclined to think that brains are rather dangerous things—and that character, which we rightly respect, is more likely to be found in those who are not clever. The word ' clever' inspires a deep mistrust. When people say: ' But is not he one of those clever men?' what they really mean is: 'ls not he almost a public danger?' Our public life has suffered terribly . from the illusion that men who are incapable of thought or expression must at least be 'safe' men."
