SOUTH OTAGO

BALCLUTHA Queen Carnival A meeting comprising chiefly delegates from the various sports bodies in the town was held on Thursday night under the auspices of the Patriotic Committee, with Mr A. I. Miller in the chair, to devise ways and means for furthering the effort on behalf of the Air Force Queen. It was pointed out that the amount the committee would have to raise was £1350. and to do so it would have to speed things up, as the time was limited to only six weeks.. Considerable discussion took place on a proposal by Mr A. E. Paterson that the committee should follow the example of Milton and run a local queen carnival, but a motion to that effect was lost on a show of hands. On Mr W. Roy's suggestion it was decided to ask the various sports bodies to work individually for the six weeks and not as an association. Delegates were appointed to call the clubs together and to make arrangements for entertainments and appeals. It was pointed out that an assistant secretary would be required, and Mr Bert Perry was appointed to the position, and also to act as publicity officer. Horticultural Uhow At a meeting of the executive of the Balclutha Horticultural Society last night it was decided not to hold the usual spring show, as so many of the members would be assisting in the queen carnival and kindred patriotic efforts. It was also decided to lend any help required to the Patriotic Committee. Horse Sale There was an entry of only 20 horses at a sale held by the associated auctioneers at the corporation yards yesterday. The entry was a mixed one, and the top price obtained for draughts was £2l, and the lowest was £7. There was really no demand, and it was hard work for the auctioneers to get the. prices they did. Hacks were also dull of sale, and prices ranged from 30s up to £B. MILTON Queen Carnival The Mayor (Mr W. J. Cockburn) presided over an attendance of about 40 members of the Milton Patriotic Committees on Thursday evening to make plans for furthering the candidature of the Air Force Queen (Miss Mary Pratt). Miss Ellen Thornton (Milton) was selected as Milton Borough Queen in the local carnival, and it was decided that the queen should choose her own maids of honour. The following committees were approved:—Publicity and Transport—Messrs J. Gray, M. Paul. J. R. Wilson, D. Sumpter, W. Fagg, G. Melville, and J. Tiffany; Entertainment —Messrs L M. Scott, H. McClymont, W. Kirby. H. Cowie, J. Densem, J. Anderson, J. Moroney, F. Hoyle. T. Bell, A. Aymes, K. Ross, Dr J. N. Edgar, the Revs. A. Fraser, S. T. NicholJs and Captain E. Thomas; Raffles—Messrs K M. Rutherford. J. A. Stewart. H Fitz Simmons, J. Murray, H. Adam, A. J. Currie, J. R. Lynch. J Maguire. A Gregson and J. G. Leckie. The Borough Queen Executive will comprise the conveners and one other member from each committee and the conveners of each of the ladies' committees. The suggestion was put forward that the central executive should conduct a big art union, each of the queens in the local contest to get the credit for the amount of the tickets sold by each committee.

It was decided to conduct a community sing on Monday night, when the Borough Queen would' be introduced.
