SUM OF £540 RAISED PATRIOTIC COUNCIL'S; EFFORT PROCEEDS TO CIH QUEENS A further step towards the Otago Provincial Patriotic Council's objec- | tive of £IOO,OOO for the rehabilitation 1 of soldiers, sailors and airmen on their return from active service was taken yesterday when a "Victory" street appeal was made in the citv and resulted in the collection of approximately £540. More than 200 collectors with boxes took up positions throughout the city and suburbs in the morning, many, of them as early ;as 7 o'clock, and the work was carried on without interruption until the evening, when the Commercial Travellers' Association took over and carried on until 9 p.m. Appeal for Direct Giving Carefully organised and well thought out, the effort was carried through with vigour and enthusiasm by the large band of workers. The appeal was different from any of its kind by reason of the fact that its success depended almost solely on direct giving, and provided an excellent opportunity for those who have objections or scruples with regard to- raffles or lotteries to show their interest in a worthy cause For the expenditure of Is, each contributor received a paper,mache badge, and metal;'flag pins and brooches were available for those prepared to' contribute 2s 6d. Two thousand of these tokens netted £250. The proceeds from the sale of aii badges during the daytime will be divided equally between the two city queen candidates, Miss Jessie McLen- . nan (Navy) and Miss Airini Grennell (Army), and in the evening there was competitive selling by the rival queen organisations.

.Parade of Youth Youth'provided the outstanding display of the occasion when it paraded in its hundreds through the city late in the afternoon. The Otago Boys' High School, the King's High School, the ■Xing Edward Technical College, and the •-Christian Brothers' High School furnished the personnel of an impressive procession which formed up at the QUeen's Gardens and paraded along Princes' street through George street to the: Hospital, and back to the Octagon 'to the accompaniment of the pipes and their own bugle bands. : ' ; ,The young marchers acquitted themselves very Well, and the boys of the King's High School, in. particular, compelled admiration by■'.-. their military precision and general bearing... ; . The proceeds from this week-end's sessions will be devoted to the candidature of the Army Queen, who was in attendance last night and contributed to the evening's entertainment. CENTRAL OTAGO TOUR The tour of,,the Central Otago districts by the Air Force Queen (Miss Mary Pratt) was continued with a concert and community sing at Roxburgh on Thursday, when the queen and her five countesses attended. ;.'-! The party recived ah ovation from a large audience. A number of articles was auctioned and the total financial results of the function were very factory—£Jo2 being raised with pother sums still tb come in. ,;. ; % Before the queen left Roxburgh for Alexandra and Omakau, a charming ceremony took place at the District High School. The head prefect- (Lynn Stockdill) then conveyed a vote of thanks to the queen and her party after which the latter was kept busy signing autographs. Miss Pratt and her countesses were the guest, of honour at a reception at Alexandra yesterday when they were met by .the. Mayor (Mr J. Bringans) and a large representation of members of the Patriotic Committees of Alexandra, Earnscleugh and the sur r rounding districts.: Miss Pratt was presented with a mascot which had been made in the district, and later the party travelled to Omakau. where a largely-attended concert and dance was held in'the evening. , The..oarty will return, to Duhediri - ta-day.
