THE BOY SCOUTS
EXHIBITION OF HOBBIES The annual exhibition of hobbies, held under the auspices of the Dunedin Boy Scouts’ Association, will be opened this evening. Similar exhibitions have been held for several years and have served to illustrate the many achievements in handicraft and other ways which are the product of the training which the Boy Scouts receive in their organisations. The latest census return taken in June of this year reveals that the strength of the movement in this district is, now practically 1500 Cubs Scouts and Rovers. The Scouts organisation is playing a definite part at the present time in the national war effort. So far, forty Scoutmasters have enlisted-and are already overseas or undergoing training in military camps in the Dominion. Those who are too voung—as the vast majority of them are too voung—for enlistment in war service are being encouraged in their spare time to look for jobs that arise out of the war conditions and are voluntarily performed. Foi this purpose war work record cards have been issued to them, and a badge o” award will be given to those among them who out their hearts into the discharge of this task. The Scout law. which everv Scout and Rover Scout promises to obev, is based on the ancient laws of King Arthur’s knights, and embraces the following principles: fit A Scout's honour is to be trusted. 121 A Scout is loyal to the King, his countrv. his Scouters. his parents, his employers, and to those under him. (3) A Scout’s dulv is to be useful and to help others. 14) A Scout is a friend of all and a brother to every other Scout, no matter to what country, class or creed (he other belopgs. (51 A Scout is courteous. 16) -A Scout is a friend to animals. 17) A Scout obeys orders. CS) A Scout smiles and whistles under all difficulties. (9) A Scout is thrifty. <TO) A Scout is clean in thought, word and deed.
