Cheddington Provided he Is in good condition on Saturday, the three-year-old Cheddington Is likely to' be a strong choice for the Avondale Trial Plate. In his last start he was narrowly beaten by Lou Rosa in the Foal Stakes, which is a great recommendation for a maiden event run at set weights. Cheddington is now trained at Matamata. Beau Leon
Beau Leon was not taken to Wanganui, but is expected to contest the Champion Hack Plate at Avondale prior to his race in the Avondale Guineas. Beau Leon finished solidly when second to Classic at Ellerslie, and gave the impression that he would be a much more forward colt at Avondale. He should be extremely hard to beat in the Plate. Xellsom
An Auckland hack that is expected to teach better company this season is Telilom, He ran prominently when not quite ready at Ellerslie, and it is expected that he will be better fitted to do himself jystice at Avondale. Tellsom has fine speed and with age Is running on better. Promising Hurdler ; Smoke Screen is not yet a proficient hurdler, but his class as a gallopei enabled him to win both the jumping events at the Wanganui meeting. The capable handling, of Ashley Jenkins materially, assisted him, especially on the first day when he could easily have been beaten. His two successful efforts last week should prqve .invaluable to Smoke Screen, who ought to acquire confidence now and probably;.be. a very much better horse next season. At Ashburton
Glenora Boy, a six-year-old bay gelding by Lord Warden from Full Swing, a half-sister by Nassau to Nlghtmarch, did some racing in Australia, winning three races in Mr G. G. Maclndoe’s colours as a three-year-old. two over a mile. He is now. owned and trained by M. B. Edwards at Yaldhurst, and had a race in the Selwyn - Handicap on the final day of the Grand National meeting. He is well enough placed in the Ashburton Handican with 7.8 If he is good enough. Reading’s . Bad Habit s
In the Warwick Stakes on Saturday week, Reading attempted to savage Beaulivre. when the New Zeland colt was getting the upper hand. This trait was also noticed last season, when High Caste was on two occasions the object of Reading’s attentions. The same bad habit Is said to have cost Beading victory in the Canterbury Stakes on Saturday, according to exchanges to hand. W. Cook, rider ol Reading, and other experts, including the judges, are stated to have expressed the opinion that by turning his head and attempting to savage Beaulivre, Reading, lost the race, the decision being half a head in favour of Beaulivre. J. T. Cush, part-owner and trainer of Reading, said that- if his charge had been allowed to wear blinkers he would have won the A.J.C. Champagne Stakes last Easter as well as the Canterbury Stakes on Saturday. Blinkers have been barfed in Australia for 20 years, the reason being that blinkers might cut off a horse’s view of the -running and cause collisions. Cush pointed out that blinkers are permitted in England, in America, and in France. Blonde Princess
One of the most impressive efforts at the Wellington winter meeting in July was that of the Hunting Song mare Blonde Princess in winning the Stewards’ Handicap, the opening day’s sprint, under 8.5. As a consequence, she was weighted 8.13 in the C.J.C. Winter Cup, but she did not continue with that engagement, and actually she has not raced since her Trentham victory. It is therefore interesting to observe her presence in ■ the two open races at Avondale on Saturday, and also her treatment in the weights there. An acceptor for both the Avondale Cup, one mile and a-quarter, and the Flying Handicap, six . furlongs. Blonde Princess is weighted at 7.3 in the former and at 8.2-in the latter. On, her form last season she; appears to have no cause whatever for-' complaint with her assessments. RACING IN AUSTRALIA MATCH RACE DECLARED OFF (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) SYDNEY, Sept. 10/ The match race between Beaulivre and Beau Vlte has suddenly been declared off. The committee controlling the Red Cross races on September 21 reconsidered the matter to-day (it is believed in consultation 'with the A.J.C.), and the announcement was made to-night of the abandonment of the fixture so as not to jeopardise the prospects of the important engagements of either horse at the forthcoming spring racing campaign. The committee, in expressing appreciation of the spontaneous offer of Messrs Hartnett and Stewart, the respective owners of the horses, to provide a match race, announced that, in place of it. £SOO would be added to the Hill,Stakes, in which it is expected Beaulivre and Beau Vite will participate, and which should provide them with a test race.

RICCARTON NOTES THE TRACKS DRYING (Special to Daily Times) CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 11. The weather was bright again this morning and present indications are for improved conditions. The ground round the training sheds is quite firm, and the tracks are drying up nicely. They should provide good galloping to-morrow for the final trials before Ashburton, Sir Frederick (I. Walther) and Courtyard (M. Hollands) were mates over four hurdles this morning. They went along at a sound pace, without being at top speed, and they gave a good exhibition, Sir Frederick was definitely the better of the pair, and made a particularly good jump to land in front over the final flight. Aggravate has been out twice this week, with A. Stokes as his pilot, having some mox-e education over the pony hurdles. He has not been the success that was hoped so far, but H. Nurse is persevering with hipi over the small obstacles before going back to the schooling hurdles. The starting barrier at the mile and a-quarter post was at the disposal of the trainers this morning, when a large number of young horses were given some practice. Among them were several two-year-olds.
Summer training hours will start on Monday, and for the next few months the racecourse gates will be open each morning at 5 o’clock. Although Scarteen figures in the list of acceptors for the Penscroft Hack Handicap, he will not be a starter at Ashburton on Saturday. He has not done any serious work lately, and he will not be raced again for a few weeks, by which time it is hoped he will have built up in condition. Guilder was lame after her work yesterday She is missing from the acceptances for Ashburton, and it looks as If she would require a good spell. Wagner did not finish well in his gallop yesterday, and the explanation came later, when he was found to be lame. A joint has been causing trouble for some time, but now he has gone in a tendon, having broken down badly. Whether he will race again remains to be seen, but In the meantime he will be spelled for several months.
F. D. Jones has taken in hand for Mr John Porter a two-year-old filly by Blandonian, a son of Blandford.
