MAJESTIC THEATRE FRANK CAPRA’S LATESTTRIUMPH “Mr Smith Goes to Washington.”—An exposition of how the game of political graft is carried on forms the basis of “Mr Smith Goes to Washington,” which will continue its season at the Majestic Theatre to-night. The story deals with the adventures of a youngster, more honest than the average politician, who gets into senate on an appointment by a contrived governor to serve the unoxpired term of a senator who has died. He stays in to flay the senators under their o\vn rules, but how he does it is a continued round of exciting situations, interspersed with laughter-provoking incidents Jean Arthur and James Stewart are co-starred, and Edward Arnold, Guy Kibbee, Thomas Mitchell, Claude Raines and Eugene Paulette are the principal supporting players. 9 OPERA HOUSE “ Full Confession.” —What happens when a determined priest tries to force a stubborn two-fisted brute to confess a murder before an 'innocent man is electrocuted for the crime provides high-pitched drama in R.K.O. Radio's " Full Confession.” with Victor McfcSglan, Sally Ellers. Joseph Callela and Barry Fitzgerald in the leading roles. “ Reno.”—How a little Nevada mining town became the American nation’s divorce capital is interestingly told in “ Reno," R.K.O. Radio's stirring screen drama based on the growth of the famous city. Richard Dix, Gail Patrick and Anita Louise are the leading players. LIME FOR FARM LANDS AMPLE SUPPLIES IN NORTH OTAGO 6 During the last few days business men and farmers have commented on the reports published in the Daily Times Indicating a shortage of lime for farm lands in Southland. The position locally is just the opposite, for there are ample supplies on hand to meet all local requirements. and a surplus Is available for outside districts. In fact, local lime works are not at present working to full capacity. and at one of them six men had to be put off recently as there were not sufficient orders coming in to keep a full staff employed. The output of one of the local works could be greatly Increased to meet requirements from outside districts.

Dowthwaite, Waiareka, Who is secretary of the combined committee. It is proposed that helpers should work in shifts of an hour and a-half, and that the time from noon to 3 p.m. be reserved for members of the women's Division and the Women's Institutes.

NORTH OTAGO SPORTS REVIEW OF THE WEEK New Bowling Green.—The congratulations of bowlers will be extended to the members of the Meadowbank Bowling Club on their enterprise in constructing a second full-sized green. In June, 1939, an area of land adjoining the old green was purchased by the club. A Government subsidy was obtained for excavating and drainage, and 350 yards of soil were removed t»y subsidised labour. The foundation was levelled to take the necessary drainage, which was provided for by seven rows of three-inch pipes. These pipes were covered with 62 yards of rough shingle. Nothing further was done for four months, but in May, 1840, a start •was made with the edging, which consisted of 8 x 2 timber with jarrah pegs, 3ft 6in centres, double-bolted, and an liiInch anchor bolt every 20 feet for extra strength. The shingle was covered with subsoil, and the area covered with four inches of soil to the top of the edging of the green. This work occupied six Saturdays, and was carried out by enthusiastic working bees of members. Drains to carry surplus water from the ditches were next constructed, after which the building of the banks was proceeded with. It is hoped to complete the final sowing of the green in February. Fortunately, there have been 14 consecutive fine Saturdays In Oamaru, which has enabled excellent progress to be made by members. A drain has also been laid from the green to Conway street, a distance of 170 feet, and water has been laid on.

Dvson, and will play J. Lehany in the final. Amateur Athletics.—The outlook lor the coming season for amateur athletics in Oamaru is not what could be termed bright. A good percentage of the senior members has answered their country’s call, and it will be hard to find a good senior team this year. In the juniors, also, a number will miss the beginning o' the season for the reason that most of them will be In camp with the volunteers. It Is not to be forgotten, however, that although there may not be quantity, there will be quality. Many members have been keeping to a training syllabus during the winter season, and should be in good form for the beginning of the season.
OAMARU BOATING CLUB ANNUAL REPORT Although the season opened under adverse conditions, satisfactory progress was made last season by the Oamaru Boating Club. In its annual report, the committee states that the plant was in good condition, and there were no oars during the season. A new racing four was ordered for delivery in February, but. owing to the unsettled conditions, the committee decided to permit the boat to be transferred to the A.N.Z.A.F. The season commenced with a slight decrease in membership, about 22 members turning out. The “ learn-to-row ” campaign earned the club six new members, and during the season four more were elected. Of those members, seven were serving overseas with the military forces, nine more were either waiting to enter or were in training camps, and six were in the territorial forces. The club members had shown increased keenness in regattas, making two trips to Timaru to compete for the John Edmond Cup. Four crews also competed at Waihola, under idea! conditions, At Port Chalmers five crews competed. The finances of the club were satisfactory, although several subscriptions were outstanding. During the season the club held several dances, all of which were financially successful. The annual picnic at Maruakoa proved a delightful outing under ideal conditions.
