DUNEDIN SUNSHINE

ro THE EDITOR Sir, —"A Little Knowledge ’’ appears to be perturbed because I did not reply to his inquiry as to where the official figures are recorded for the hours of sunshine in Dunedin. My reason for not doing so is that I have not the slightest idea of the exact position where the figures are recorded. I take it that instructions are given by the Meteorological Department in Wellington how and where the figures are to be recorded, and “A Little * Knowledge ” can satisfy his curiosity by writing to Wellington for the necessary information. He mentions the Otago Daily Times roof. If he will take the trouble to look for himself he will find that the sun is shining for an hour or two longer from Opoho all the extreme northern end of the city to Anderson’s Bay and St. Clair at the extreme southern part, than it does on the roof of the Otago Daily Times building, which is hidden to a great extent by the hills of Mornington and Roslyn and tall buildings in Dowling and High streets. Why, therefore, pick out the Otago Daily Times building? I do know that at Nelson, which leads for hours of sunshine, the records are taken from the top of a hill, and at Wellington the instruments are on the top of the observatory hill. My whole object in forward the figures for the various cities was to let Dunedin residents and others -know how well Dunedin stands for rain and sunshine as compared with .the north.—l am. etc.. Dunedinite.
