.OTAGO PROVINCIAL COUNCIL REPORTS OF COMMITTEES IPECIAL APPEAL ON FRIDAY A meeting of the. Otago Provincial Patriotic Council was held yesterday afternoon, the Mayor (Mr A. H. Allen) presiding. Representatives were also present from.the Vincent and Tuapeka Counties. Appeals Committee Mr ■ James Hogg submitted the Appeals Committee’s report, dealing . chiefly with the appeal next Friday, which he described as a perfect opportunity for those who believed in direct giving. People were asked to buy a badge for the queens and place their further contributions in the boxes that were to be carried from end to end of the city by 200 to 300 women, representative of all the women’s organisations -.available. The appeal would commehce at 7 a.m. and would be carried on till 5 p.m., when the Queen Carnival Committee would take charge until'9 o’clock. Arrangements, had been .made for bands, parades of secondary school cadets and bands at 4 p.rti„ a decorated and illuminated tram, and other features. Mr Hogg said it-was- hoped to raise £2OOO to £ 3000 froth the appeal. The Mayor said the proceeds of the appeal would. be divided between the two city queen's. . ..He also referred to the need for a. canvass of city .firms for larger amounts. ; Many business houses had not yet contributed, and he was sure they would be anxious to do all they could. / , r Finance Committee : Mr Edgar Hazlett presented the report of. the Finance Committee, including accounts totalling £768 15s for payment. ’ It was explained that £621 11s of that sum had been spent on wool for patriotic purposes. V;;-.; Soldiers’ Emergency Committee Dr W. Newlands, for the Soldiers’ 1 ’ Emergency Committee; said one claim .had been made since -the last meeting, and a satisfactory settlement had been made. - 1 Freehold Property Mr H. McDowell ,Smith, on behalfof the Freehold Property Committee; said the appeal for materials was expected to close at the end of the week, and it was hoped to make a start with the building of the House early next week. , • . ■ : •. ■ Country Districts Reports on the work of the committees in the counties of Vincent and Tuapeka were submitted by Messrs James Ritchie and John Bennetts respectively, both of whom gave an outline of the efforts already made and the proposed attractions still to come. Mr Ritchie explained that his district stretched from the Nevis to Makarara, and it had been found that one of the best methods to adopt was the card system of regular giving. This would be suspended during the queen carnival, but only temporarily. / A resolution congratulating the country representatives on the; work in hand or projected was carried unanimously. 1 V.'” ’ ! Treasurer’s Report The 1 treasurer (Mr R. A, Johnston*) reported- that-collections to August 31 •had totalled £33,983. Expenses for the period had amounted to £lO4l. Of the net funds £IB,OOO had been inyested. leaving net balances in hand in the various accounts of £ 7806.
