Sovereign Lady Is engaged in the Ashburton Handicap at the Ashburton meeting next Saturday, but it is only in recent seasons that she has raced awav from her home track. Rlccarton. Bred and raced by Mr G, Murray Avnsley, Sovereign Lady is an eight-year-old bav mare by Winning Hit from Liege Ladv. a Paladin mare bred by Mr J. F. Buchanan hi 1925 While there seems little chance thai she will show further improvement, Sovereign Lady should add to her winning list this season Line on Avondale Guineas The appearance of the three-year-olds Lou. Rosa. Phaleron. Gay Miss, Grandora, Marshall Hall, find Queen City in the Flying Handicap at Avondale should invest the race with Interest, for the event is likely to furnish a line upon the Avondale Guineas on the second day Of this lot, Lou Rosa and Gay Miss are the only two handicapped at over weight-for-age. but their form last season was impressive. It Is possible, however, that the favourite will be Llandaff. who was hot produced at Ellerslie last month, owing to the soft track Scraps Of Paper

Commenting on the Seizure of French thoroughbreds by the Germans, the wellknown English writer, “ Rapier,” says:— “ I do not believe that any real profit will accrue to the enemy. Nobody will take the slightest Interest in German bloodstock after the war. because nobody will'give, the slightest credence to pedigrees of any horses which have been in German or German-occupied territory As far as racing and breeding are concerned. Germany is bevond the pale, nd I see no option for the trustees of the Stud Book but to exclude rigidly all stock which cannot be proved to have been out of reach of the enemy.” German pedigrees will be scraps of paper. Orelio Working Well Again working with all his former dash, the Limond colt Orelio is pleasing trackwatchers, and he should be seen to early advantage. Orelio did not do quite as well as expected in o open sprint company in the autumn, but possibly he was not quite at his best at this stage of the season, and now that he has had the bene-, fit of a respite he should resume racing with renewed vigour and has excellent prospects of reaching a very high place among the sprinters. Namara

The dash being displayed by Namara in his most recent tasks suggests that the Lackham horse will not be long in reproducing the good form he displayed last autumn. Namara was very consistent last season and but for the fact that he suf: fered a couple Of setbacks when at the top of his form his record may have been even more imposing. Young as handicappers go, Namara should be destined to reach even greater heights when his powers are fully developed. He is to make a reappearance on’ the second day of the Avondale meeting. Birthday Boy Another attempt is being made. to produce Birthday Boy for late spring’ and summer racing, and the Limond gelding is in fine order after his enforced respite. It is questionable whether he will stand a great deal of racing, as he has gone amiss on a couple of occasions, but there is no doubt that he would still prove a force to be reckoned with In handicap events should he, survive a preparation. ’ The Neyv Starter The well-known trainer L. G. Morns has , been appointed . starter for the Hawke’s Bay Club. That means that he will be unable to race horses there. Morris is not the first licensed trainer to hold such an appointment, as R. E. Hatch acted for some West Coast clubs. The Rules of Racing debar the holder of a trainer's licence from acting as handicapper. but do not place any restrictions on him so far as starting or even judging are concerned. Brother to Anita Foe

During the last few weeks Hector Gray has had several additions to his team, and on Wednesday Mr - J. C. Edmunds’? bay colt by Defoe was added to hls‘ stable. A full brother to Anita Foe, the youngster is in first-class order for a preparation, but owing to his size critics are doubtful whether he would be seen to advantage until late In his two-year-old career. Noitaro, a speedy mare who has previously shown good form. Is nowbeing prepared by Gray, who has also received a four-year-old gelding by Vaals, while. Ascot Bloom and Dinkv Di have again joined the stable. In addition to the above-mentioned horses. Gray is working four two-year-olds, these being Minko (Ringmaster—Severe). Kawariki (Vermeer—Good Idea), Oouatia (FoxbridgeTeremail. and Eagle Hawk (Bronze Eagle —Lady: Billie).'the first-named pair having received a special preparation tor early two-year-old races. Verulam Silver Quex, Namara and The Dozer make 14. the complement of the stable, and when all have acquired racing condition it should prove a very formidable team Avondale Candidates The Rotorua trainer W. G. Stephens has reached Ellerslie with Kena and Desert Tide, who are engaged at the Avondale Jockey Club’s first spring meeting. Kena, who scored In the Parllamentary Handicap at Trentham in July is a mass of condition and should strip very fit to contest the Avondale Cud. in which he finished second to Tidewaiter two veers ago. and was unplaced last year. Rlngtrue raced fairly consistently for a win and four placlngs in 10 starts at the end of the season. He was beaten at Addington in April by ‘he greatly-improved JCsse Owens, but at his next appearance won the Ritchie Memorial at Forbury Park. Rlngtrue had little opportunity in Auckland to race at two miles, but last month at Addington registered 4min 21 4-ssec off 4.32 for third in the Queen Mary Handicap to‘ Great Divide and Dusky Sound. Kenworthy Kenworthy, one ot the best pacers, bred and raced in the Auckland Province, made his Initial appearance at Addington last month when, in the Selwyn Handicap, he finished third to Wee Potts and Quest, both of whom were in receipt of 12 yards. The first event will be tun at the club's Easter meeting In 1943 The stake will be £SOO, and the distance one mile and a-half. This is in addition to the New Zealand Derby Stakes of £IOOO. which is included in the November programme. For several years there has been persistent agitation for a race that would encourage the breeding of pure galted horses.

SOUTHLAND YOUNGSTERS (Special to Daily Times) INVERCARGILL, Sept. 10. Heavy rain fell throughout last night, and the grass tracks were closed at Invercargill this morning Pace work on the cinder track was the order of the morning’s work. The weather is bright and sunny to-day, and the tracks should be available to trainers to-morrow. A newcomer to headquarters this morning was a well-grown two-year-old chestnut filly by Salmagundi from the Woodend—Glentruin mare Glentruin’s Daughter, thus a half-sister to Baltruin. The youngster is one of Mr W. E. Hazlett’s team, which now includes three two-year-olds, all beng by Salmagundi. The two-year-old filly by Paper Money from Cupid’s Dart (dam of Foxlove) has been showing signs of a cold, and has been turned out. She was engaged in the McLean Stakes, but she is only a pony and it is unlikely that she will be raced this season Her place in F. W. Ellis’s stable has been taken by the four-year-old Full Feather gelding Lucky Feathet who has done well during his holiday. The Nigger Minstrel—Thornton gelding in F. W Ellis’s stable has furnished into a solid type of three-year-old. Melodist, by Nigger Minstrel from the New Zealand Cup winner Stceton, has also growr and built up nicely during her spell These two novices are being prepared for the spring meetings, and both may make their debut at Gore next month. They showed much promise when in training as two-year-olds, and the Steeton filly reminds one very much of her dam Both are first foals The one from Thornton will carry the colours of Mr V. Baird who had much success a few years ago with Cough and other good gallopers. The Steeton filly is held on lease by Mr James Dick, of Invercargill, who is a young newcomer to the ranks of the owners.

Sir Denis has been put into work again by R. E McLellan. The Irish Lancer gelding was pottered about on his owner’s station for several weeks before being brought in, and is in splendid order to start on a preparation. Last season he had five races and won the novice race at the Wairio meeting at his last appearance. He is a four-year-old half-brother to Milford.
