Taieri Competitions Festival A committee meeting of the Taxen Competitions, held at Mosgiel, was presided over by the Rev. W. Edgar. Mr G. E. Wilkinson, musical adjudicator, wrote asking that marks for memorising in the piano, violin and vocal classes be deleted from report sheets—The suggestion was adopted. Pipers R. McKenzie and N. Stratton were appointed official pipers for national dancing. The following working officials were appointed:—Stage manager, Mr S. W. Osborne; competitors’ marshall, Mr W. Campbell: time-keeper, assistant stage manager and marshall, Mr J. W. Johnston; judges’ and press steward, Mr B, Ewart: ticket box. Miss J. Harrison; chief ushers, Messrs L. S. Dyer and B. Wood: lighting effects. Mr W Borrow. It was left with Mrs Mason and Miss C. Cheyne to arrange a women's catering committee. The following are to be invited to act as chairmen for sessions:—The Mayor (Mr W. P. Hartstonge), Mr A. F. Quelch, the Revs. E. P. Y. Simpson, A. McFarlane, S. C. Read, H. W Haigh and Adjutant W. B. Crichton. Mrs R. Harrison’s donation of ss. Mrs G. Mutch’s donation of 5s to the prize fund, Miss Westland’s donation of 10s 6d to the piano prize list, and Mrs E. Lobb’s donation of 6s for first and second prizes for the character sketch under 12. were accepted with thanks It was decided to make a display of trophies in a shop window in Mosgiel. Community Sing “ Mosgiel’s own ” first birthday community sing, sponsored by the Mosgiel Business Men’s Association, in aid of local objects, was held on Monday evening. The local song leaders and a number of popular performers provided an enjoyable programme. The "birthday cake," which weighed 341 b, was exhibited on the stage. Mrs E. J Mason cut the cake and everyone in the hall was given a piece. The guests for the evening were the South Dunedin Business Men’s Association Committee and its song leaders. Assisting entertainers who contributed enjoyable numbers were Mrs Barnett (vocal) Miss E. Frew (elocution). Messrs McKinlay and W. A, Finnic (vocal) Mr T, R. Thomson (conjuring). Mr J Milne (vocal), Messrs E and N. Cooper (instrumental), Mrs A. Walmsley and Miss F. Hicks were the accompanists. A mock court was conducted by Messrs W. S. Scott and H. C. Connor. During the evening the president (Mr E. J, Mason), on behalf of the committee, presented to Messrs Cate. McLean and Skinner, small gifts in appreciation of their work during the past year. The president spoke of the amount of organising work done during the past year by the committee members, and particularly Mr J, J. Prosser (secretary) and Mr F Cheyne (past president). Prior to the entertainment in the hall a “ Roll out the Barrel Derby ” was

held in Gordon road. The proceeds of this were in aid of the Otago Soldiers’ Parcel Fund. The event, which was won by Mr A. F. Quelch, caused considerable amusement, the local citizens competing finding its difficult to keep their barrels on the course. Band music added to the evening’s enjoyment. A raffle for a hamper, which was won by Miss B. Tunzleman, raised over £ls. The raffle was drawn in the presence of the police.
