SAFELY CONVOYED
TROOPS IN MIDDLE EAST AUSTRALIANS INCLUDED SHIPS IN EGYPTIAN WATERS (United Press Association). (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright), CAIRO, Sept; 8. Convoys of ships bringing men and materials from England, .Rhodesia, India and Australia, have arrived, in Egyptian waters. Large liners transported thousands- of technicians, infantry and hospital staffs. '."'"'•" This convoy was met by other convoys with R.A.F. personnel from Australia, and tea planters from Ceylon. « Trains laden with soldiers left for Cairo, Palestine and elsewhere. No submarines or enemy planes were sighted throughout the voyage. The troops from England are composed largely of men who fought in France. , An official communique states that on Saturday evening enemy aircraft raided Port Sudan, causing little damage and only one casualty. • There is nothing to report from the other fronts. A communique issued in Rome states: An Italian; submarine- sank a British naval patrol ship in the approaches to the Straits of Gibraltar. Bombers and fighters attacked arsenals at Malta and Casu, causing great destruction, and fires. They also hit a submarine. in the fittingout basin. Two British planqs were shot down and probably a third. AH ours returned. Some members of the crews were wounded. Another formation bombed Aden and shot down an enemy fighter. British planes bombed and machine-gunned Buna, wounding a native.
