BALCLUTHA Air Force Queen The gross takings at the carnival on the Show Ground on Saturday in aid of the Air Force Queen (Miss Mary Pratt) amounted to £157 Is, and, in addition. £ls 7s was taken at the dance at night It is. hoped to clear £l2O after paying all expenses, and this is. regarded as quite a promising effort for a start. Personal Mr James Gordon Henderson, employed in the carpentry department at the local freezing works, was met on Friday afternoon by the staff and presented with a well-filled money belt, the occasion being his approaching departure for Trentham Camp. Mr W. Luke, works manager, made the presentation, and Mr Henderson suitably replied. Mr Henderson, who is a son of Mr Charles Henderson, of Renfrew street has been posted to the Engineers' unit at Trentham, and will leave with the next draft for camp. TAHAKOPA Rainfall for August The low rainfall total of 2.31 inches was recorded for the Tahakopa district, for the month of August. July's total of 1.3 inches gives a total of 3.61 inches, as against 17.5 inches for the corresponding two months last year. This gives an indication of the remarkable weather experienced for the past two months. No rain fell during the first 12 days of August, and during this time residents were seriously inconvenienced through a shortage of water. Wild Pig Captured Recently a party of three, Messrs A. Grant, manager of Messrs Hogg and Co (Dunedin), A. Griffin and C. Haves (Tahakopa), captured a wild pig which they transported alive to the township. The animal, which is black, is a typical example of the " Captain Cooker," and possesses a long pointed nose. It weighs about 1201 b. The three men with one pig dog went several miles up the Tahakopa Valley before striking into likely country The dog bailed up the pig, and the meii. after some anxious moments, succeeded in putting its head in a bag, and in tying the feet together. The party also shot a large boar. Farmers in the Lauriston area report that wild pigs have come down from the hills and have been seen on the cleared land, and sheep farmers are on guard to protect the lambs Combined Church Service At Maclennan on Sunday afternoon, a combined church service in connection with the National Day of Prayer was held. There was a large attendance, visitors being present from Kahuika, Tahakopa, Chaslands and Stuarts. The Rev. Mr Sands. Presbyterian minister In the Catlins area, and Lieutenant Howan, of the Salvation Army, conducted the service. Mesdames 'Boyle and Tough (Maclennan) rendered a duet. Working Bee On Saturdav the Tahakopa lawn tennis courts presented a busy appearance, as the work of top-dressing the courts was carried out by members of the club. It is hoped that the courts will be ready for use at an early date. The official opening is to take place in a fortnight's time.
