The sum of £250 was voted the War Expenses Account at the annual conference in Wellington last week of the New Zealand Fruitgrowers' Federation. Delegates said that though times were hard for growers, they wanted to show they were behind the war effort. Addressing the Wanganui Rotary Club, Mr M. Sendyk, a Pole who left his country some 18 months ago, said that one of the measures taken by his people to retard the Nazi invasion was to destroy railway time-tables. That, he said, might not seem impressive, but wljen it is known that trains, both international and national, had to pass through Warsaw every few minutes, something of the intricacies of the time-table could be imagined. The disappearance of the dog was noticed when he failed to return to his home at night, and in the morning searchers heard him barking beneath a building in the business area of the town. When a rescuer dug under the foundations and wormed his way in he discovered that the dog had fallen into a disused well, the location of which had been forgotten. When a fruit-case attached to ropes was lowered to the level of the water, the dog was persuaded to jump in and was hauled to the surface. Hastings, by motorists, who have caused actual damage to the gardens and golf links, the council has decided that during periods when there is no camp warden in attendance, certain areas of the park will not be available for the parking of vehicles. A meeting of shearing contractors in Hawke's Bay decided that in view of increased costs it would be necessary to increase the shearing contract price for the coming season. The higher cost cf living and the increased wages now said to shearers and shed-hands amounted to about 15J per cent., it was stated at the meeting, and it was to counter this that the new charges had been decided upon. The rates will now be £3 12s 6d a 105 where the contractors provide all food; in cases where the contractors provide all food other than meat the price is to be £3 10s a 100. Fksk, 3s 6d... Well known on many parts of the New Zealand coast, and in Australia, but seldom seen by Wellington people, one of the most grotesque-looking New Zealand fishes is the elephant fish. A large example, three feet long and weighing 201 b, was caught recently by a fisherman casting his line from the rocks in Palliser Bay., and was-sent to the Dominion Museum. A cast has been prepared for exhibition. As its name indicates, the elephant fish has its head extended in the form of a trunk or probcscis, but the shape of this appendage more resembles that of a boot than of an orthodox elephant's trunk. It is a curious-looking fish in other respects, for its body is much the shape of a shark's, smooth and scaleless, and is coloured metallic silver-grey, with greenish black blotches.
