The monthy meeting of the Tuapeka Mouth Institute was presided over by Mrs McLeod, when a motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of a member. The motto was, "The best lessons we can learn are from our own mistakes," and the roll call "Recipes for savouries." Parcels were handed in for refugee children. Mrs Thomson gave an interesting demonstration on roller bandaging. A competition, "Jar of Chutney," resulted: Mrs Latimer 1. The hostesses were Mesdames D. Brown and G. Frazer.
The Macandrew Bay Institute held its monthly meeting on Thursday last, Mrs Vickers presiding. The motto was "The actions of to-day make the memories of to-morrow," and the roll call "Economic Summer Puddings.'' The Broad Bay Institute paid a surprise visit. Miss Dees and Mrs Harley rendered a duet, and demonstrations on the making of wood pulp and felt flowers and a felt bag were given by Miss Evans. Two interesting letters were read from the Link in England. A collection of 30s was handed over for soldiers' parcels. The hostesses were Mesdames Hinkley, Riddell, Wills, Weir, Dickinson, McPherson, and Wilson. The competitions resulted: Embroidery—Mrs Stapleton 1, Mrs Hinkley 2; bloom—Mesdames Ryan and Stapleton (equal) 1, Mrs Dickinson 3.
The monthly meeting of the Alexandra Institute was held on Thursday, Mrs Lunn presiding. The roll call was "A shilling for soldiers' parcels," and the motto " It's good to have plenty of push,, but pulling together gets you further." The competition, " Warning," resulted: Mrs Pryor 1, Mrs Fawcett 2. A demonstration on "Wood-pulp flowers" was given by Mrs Cowie. The hostesses were Mesdames Pryor, Guy. and King. # * *
The monthly meeting of the MacraesMoonlight Institute was held on Wednesday last. Mrs Hay presiding. The roll call was "What I like doing best in the* house," and the motto "Deeds, not words." It was decided to heln the lepers at Makogai. A competition. "Something from one yard of cotton," resulted: Mrs Heffernan 1, Mrs Hay 2. The social half-hour was conducted by Mrs Heffernan. with two amusing competitions, one being won by Miss Ockwell and the other by Mrs Sutherland. The hostesses were Mrs Stanley and Miss Ockwell.
The Kaka Point Institute met on Wednesday last. Miss Bates presiding. The motto was "It's the songs you sing and the smiles you wear that make the sunshine everywhere," and the roll call " Bring and buy a 6d parcel" The competitions resulted:—Arranged bowl of nolyanthus—Mrs Prentice 1. Mrs Aitkenhead 2, Miss Shiels 3; shoulder- spray—Mesdames Rein and Aitkenhead (equal) 1. Mrs Prentice 3, Mrs Johnston 4.
When beating eggs, a folded towel placed on the table, underneath the basin, will lessen the noise of the beating.
