Ministerial The Postmaster-general and Minister of Defence, Mr F. Jones, was engaged in departmental business yesterday, and performed the official opening of the centennial exhibition of New Zealand art last night. The Minister will visit Wingatui for “ Schools’ Day ” today.
The Minister in Charge of the Police Department, Mr P. Fraser, returned to Wellington yesterday from Rotorua, where he officially opened a new police station.
Mr S. Hastie left for Invercargill yesterday. ' Mr C. K. Saxton was a passenger for the south by the express yesterday morning. Dr W. Borrie left for Wellington by the express yesterday morning to attend the annual conference of the New Zealand Library Association. Mr H. McDowell Smith left by the express yesterday morning for Wellington, where he will attend the annual conference of the Architects' Institute and to assist at the Dominion Court. Mr R. H. Fraser also left yesterday for Wellington to attend the conference.
Mr W. Ruddiman, who will leave for Wigram this morning to join the Air Force, was yesterday, afternoon presented with a cheque on behalf of the management and staff of Bray Bros. The presentation was made by Mr H. C. Williamson, the manager.
Mr Eric- Brebner, 8.D.5., lately of the Dental Department, Christchurch Public Hospital, returned north by the first express yesterday. He will take up an appointment at the Dental Nurses’ Training Clinic in Wellington. Mr Elliot Hogg, B.Sc., has been appointed to a position on the training ship H.M.S. Philomel. Mr and Mrs Hogg left last week to reside at Auckland.

In addition to making X-ray examinations of every man in echelon units, the Papakura medical officers will shortly be making a start with the blood-typing of all those going overseas. This work was also carried out with the first echelon
Every man’s blood is tested and classified into one of four groups. His fvpe is later stamped on his identity disc, so that at need transfusions will be made much easier. Officers with Great War service emphasise the value of this system and state that numberless lives would have been saved in that war if sych a method had then been operating.

Mcjor L W Andrew, V.C., to be temporary lieutenant-colonel in command of the 22nd Wellington Battalion Captain C Shutlleworth to be acting lieutenant-colonel to command the 24th Auckland Battalion.
