IMPROVEMENT OF ACID SOILS

T imd makes a better medium for plants of “economic importance :to obtain phosphorus. This photograph, illustrating this point, was ‘ taken on Mr Peter Robertson’s farm at Waiwera and shows the benefit of the adequate liming of acid soils as an aid to enhance superphosphate response. Two tons of lime per acre were applied on the right of the peg and only one ton:per acre on the left, but the whole area received a dressing of . 2cwt per. acre of superphosphate. Note 1 the excellent response to the superphosphate where the heavier dressing of lime was applied. A point worth remembering and often overlooked is that when acid soils have been adequately limed it is necessary to apply superphosphate, because low crop production (whether the crop be roof, grain or grass) is often due to lack of . phosphorus.
