CONFUSION ON “THE LEFT "

A lot of hard thinking is going on among supporters of “ the Left ” in Great Britain. and among .the “ advanced ” groups and parties in France (writes Mr Wickham Steed from London to the Christian Science Monitor). They will certainly not become pro-capitalist. They may not ye I realise that their outlook will tend to resemble that of the “ Liberals ” whom, in the past, they have so often scorned, but whose “ values ” of individual and political freedom are new seen to be worth defending. It may be hard for the holders of “values,” thus transmuted, to escape all at once from the jargon and the catchwords which they have borrowed from Marxism. They feel they may have to speak a different language in future, although they do not quite know where and how to learn it.
