NOTES ON THE RUNNING EASY’ WIN FOR PHALANX /• ' (Special to Laxly Times) INVERCARGILL. Feb. 17. 1 Cross Rose' was sent out a good favourite for the Trial Stakes, but she was not sighted at any part of it and finished well back. Colonel Rouge, who was permitted to go out at a good price, was one of the smartest out, and with three furlongs to go he and Slamannan had drawn out two lengths clear of My Song and Royal Money. Colonel Rouge was first into the straight and he came right away to beat Slamannan comfortably; My Song stayed on long Enough to beat Strathalbvn for third. In Flight misbehaved at the start, and he finally dropped his rider and the field was sent away without him.' . Stanza was a good favourite for the Oreti Trot, bid, he did not show up at any stage. Yon Yan was always hemmed in on the rails in a close running field. He was handily placed when the straight was reached, arid when the field straightened up he shot to the front. From then on he was not troubled to win. Erinack finished better than Overproof for second, while Pontoon came with a belated run to be fourth. Stanza finished well back, and Indianola tangled after putting in a promising run at the home turn. Royal Bond tried to win all the way. but was beaten with two furlongs to go. . Waitoru was a firm favourite for the Soldier 1 Members’ Memorial Handicap, but he let his supporters down badly, and in a four-horse field finished last. Peony Rose ran to the front at the end of two furlongs and tried to win all the way, Valantua. who had moved into second place at .the horns turn, was right with Peony Rose at the top of the straight, and in the run home beat her by’ half a’ length. Under her- big ■weight Peony Rose’s effort was a game one. Chirp was two lengths away third, and Waitoru well back. Valantua s success was well deserved, as he has raced consistently on the circuit. After being well back in the early running Night Pal finished very solidly to win the Awarua Handicap. Recall, who made most of the pace, was first into the straight from Gold Robe, Counterlunch, Pink Bond and Night Pah ; The last named secured a good opening when the field straightened up and he shot through. At the distance he came away to beat Counterlunch by three-quarters of a length. Craiglea was firiishing oh iri .third place and Pink Bond was a fair, fourth. Aspire was-never a posibility after being slow away. Gusto improved on his first days effort, and gave a much more polished display of jumping to win the Turi Steeplechase. He was always in second place behind the pacemaker. Osculate, and when the latter cried enough three furlongs from home Guste took charge and was, not afterwards in danger of defeat. Crirban,'who was having his first race for several months, beat the others as easily as he was beaten. He will be greatly improved ,by the race. ■ Poniard was always well out of it and finished a moderate fourth. Gay Boa again gave a solid showing for third. Bally Brit fell at the sod wall the first time, and his rider, P. J. Boyle, suffered eye ' injuries. He was the only one of the 10 starters not to complete the course. ’ In a four-horse field in the Stewards’ Handicap, Phalanx made an exhibition of the others. New Note was slow to jump out, and at the end of a furlong Viking had charge from Phalarix and Spendthrift. The 'last-named joined Viking in the lead across the top, and they led Phalanx round the home turn. Phalanx was challenging Spendthrift at the straight entrance from New Note, and Viking was beaten off. In the run home Phalanx was not seriously challenged, arid he came right away to beat Spendthrift by three lengths. New Note was four lengths away third, and Viking' last.

Erin's View tried to win all the way. but Erin’s Country had his measure three furlongs from home. Erin’s Country was first'into the straight, and although Samara tried to make a race of it the leader hung on well. Green finished better than Erin’s View for third. Rey Chimes and the favourite. Polling Day did not begin correctly. Blissful Lady justified the confidence shown in her in the Benmore Handicap, and she won from end to end. This was the winner’s third success in as many starts. Cone Peak joined Blissful Ladv in the lead racing, into the back, Moonraider. Merrv Simon, and Cherdkee were the handiest of the others. NOTES ON THE RACING (Special to Dailv Times i CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 17. The New Brighton Trotting Club held its jubilee meeting to-day in fine weather, following on threats of rain in ■ the morning. The track was in great order, and there was a very large attendance to witness some excellent racing. The totalisator investments reached a record of £40,081. It was a very successful meeting in most respects. but the pleasure of many of the club’s patrons was minimised by the failure to keep even close to the time table, the last race being started more than an hour late. When the field. settled down in the Pioneer Handicap Anna’s Voyage was showing the way. with Sphinx. Dollar Maid, and Native. Huon heading the others. Dollar Maid dropped back after two furlongs, and a little further on Sphinx joined Anna’s Voyage in the lead, with Native Huon. Header. Bush Laddie, Shadeland. and Violet Wrack next. Sphinx started to drift at the home turn; Native Huon challenged in the steaight. getting up to beat Anna’s Voyage by a head, with Shadeland a length away and Violet Wrack two lengths further back. Bush Laddie, the win favourite, faded out in the last halfmile while Houghton Feast, also well hacked, broke soon after the start. Diversion was first to show out in the Birthday Handicap. Trireme, Great Blaze, Pamelas, and Three Tens being prominent in the next bunch. With half a mile gone Diversion'was folloycd by Pamelas and Three Tens, while Guncase had run up to head the /others, with Axspear. Trireme, and Palomar handy. Guncase took charge at the six-furlong post, and still was showing the way at the home turn, with Three Tens. Diversion. Palomar, and Great Blaze heading the others, while Special Edition was moving up. Guncase retired when the straight was reached, leaving Three Tens in front from Diversion. Palomar, and Great Blaze. In the run to the post Palomar got up to beat Three Tens in the last couple of strides Diversion was a teng.th back, then Great Blaze, after two" lengths, while Special Edition headed the others Palomar was due, after being placed more than once lately. He is an improving horse. Accountant, the favourite, was slow to move in the Progressive Handicap. Attain soon headed Colonel Axworthy, while at the end of two furlongs Attain was just in front of Passport and Purina, with Colonel Axworthy, Battlefield, Gay Avon and Voloma next. Along the back Attain was clear of Passport, with Colonel Axworthy and Battlevale handy, while Accountant was moving up from a good way back. There was no change to the straight, where Passport and Colonel Axworthy began to tire, leaving Battlevale, ’ Gay Avon arid Accountant to follow the leader. Attain hung on to win by a length from Accountant, who finished strongly to beat Battlevale by a neck. Gay Avon was two lengths back, with Colonel Axworthy heading the others. Attain had. not won previously this season, though she had been placed several times.

Colonel Grattan. Southern Chief and Great Jewel failed to begin properly in the Jubilee Handicap, the failure of the last-named pair to go off. robbing the race of some interest. Pot Luck, from a fast start, soon took the lead jfrom Renown’s Best, with Cantata and Marsceres next. This was the order after half a mile, where Plutus was next. Three furlongs from home the order was Pot Luck, Cantata, Renown’s Best. Plutus and Marsceres, but Cantata retired whpn the straight was reached. Plutus finished solidly, but could not get near Pot Luck, who won by two lengths, while four lengths back Marsceres beat Renown’s Best by a head. Great Jewel, was fifth. Pot Luck also won the prizes for the horse in front at the end of half a mile and a mile. The Wellington Cup, early this month, was' his first success this season, but he had been in minor places seven times. The A. I. Rattray Handicap was a good race; Red Pigeon soon took change, but Mankind was in front after two furlongs, with Token, Red Pigeon, Wee Potts. Recess and Quest handy. There was no change along the back, but Roan Duke and Toorak moved up after passing the half-mile post. Mankind and Token led to the straight. Red Pigeon headed them a furlong from the post and stalled off a challenge from Toorak by a neck. Quest was three lengths back, just in front of Roan Duke. Though she had been prominent in many races, Red Pigeon had not won a race this season, and she had been placed 11 times since she previously 'had a win. Grade Fields began fast to take the lead early in the President’s Handicap, after which none of her opponents got near her, paying a surprising dividend, in view of her success at Addington a week previously. Gyrate, Jenny’s Guy, Te Kahu, and Franz Derby followed her for a mile, where Lament, Tan John and Mute were handy, with Royal Romance moving up, further back. Grade Fields went on to win decisively, while Jenny’s Guy stayed a little to well for Gyrate, who was beaten for second place in the last couple of strides. Royal Romance came home strongly in fourth place, with Lament and Te Kahu close up. The Centennial Handicap, contested by some speedy milers, was a fine race. Marlene set the early pace from Fremont and Token, Frisco Boy being handy along the back. Nelson Eddy then moved up fast, taking second place at the half-mile post, just behind Marlene, with Frisco Bov. Fremont, and Harold Guy heading the others. Marlene led Nelson Eddy and Harold Guy to the straight, where Lightning Lady flashed up on the outside, while Fremont, who had lost his place at the home turn, also came on again when heads were turned for home. Nelson Eddy was in front a furlong from the post, Marlene having dropped out, but Lightning Lady finished resolutely to beat Nelson Eddy by half a length. Harold Guy came home fast, only half a length away, stalling off Fremont’s late challenge by a neck. The winner has been a very consistent performer for a long time, and on this occasion she beat Nelson Eddy in good style. Loyal Pat began smartly and led all the way in the Members’ Handicap. Repeal, Gay Avon, Mankind, and Aqua Bond followed him after a furlong, while Aircraft moved up along the back, to follow Loyal Pat, Repeal, and Gay Avon past the half-mile post. Aqua Bond, Mankind, and Ochiltree being handy. Subsidy then moved up, joining in with the front lot at the home turn, where Aircraft dropped back. Loyal Pat was followed halfway up the straight by Gay Avon, Subsidy, and Ochiltree. From there, Loyal Pat held on to win by a length. Gay Avon beating Ochiltree by half a length, with Subsidy close up. Aqua Bond and Mankind headed the others, after a gap. Loyal Pat is a speedy pacer, liable to improve.

AT WINGATUI SATURDAY’S GALLOPS The weather was dull, but ipild, at Wingatui on Saturday morning when it was found that the rain of the previous Thursday had not greatly softened the going, which will leave nothing to be desired for the Dunedin Cup meeting if the weather continues in anything like a favourable mood. The. going was softer on the inside grass, which is a bit bare and broken through training operations. The sand track was also in use, but all the fast work took place on the grass track. Each gallop was timed from the red disc, and not from the posts marking the various distances. ’’ A material difference can be made in time in a gallop near the trestles in the middle of the track or by travelling wide near the rails. The first gallop took place between Gay Lancer and Turncoat, who travelled in company over six furlongs in Imin 21 3-ssec. They were not fully extended at the finish. Nightwings and Travenna went away at half-pace from the straight, and, improving the pace near the sevenfurlong post, went on to pick up Palencia at the six. They ran along in

company until reaching the straight, where Palencia dropped ' out. The others came along, and both finished well under a hold. They completed the seven furlongs in Imin 34 2-ssec and the last six in Imin 21sec. Taxpayer and Lady Constant covered a strong five furlongs in Imin Bsec. Norseman and Hanlon went on from Our Empire over the last six of seven, furlongs in Imin 18sec—the seven in Imin 30sec, Norseman travelled well in his task. Others worked during the morning included Combat, Attractive Note, Songboy, Denis Dowling, My Mistake, Islay Downs, Mosgiel, Royal Style, Withdrawal, Straightdel, Georgia, Roseman, Remembo, Vallock. At Trentham B. H. Brodie is now attached to T, R, George’s stable at Trentham.

Retiring It is reported that * the well-known Trentham horseman S. Wilson is retiring from race-riding, and will probably enter commercial life.

Relations , A well-known trainer was once told by a talkative owner that the latter had just bought a full-sister to the winner of a great race. “ That’s nothing.” said the trainer dourly. “ I knew Melba, but her brother couldn’t even whistle in tune.” The. Soft Sex

Since 1874 the Dunedin Cup has been won seven times by mares, and eight of that sex are engaged in this year’s race,, Sparkle The Win ton. Cup winner Sparkle is a five-year-old chestnut mare go.t by Colonel Cygnus from Lambent, by Tractor—Dazzling Light, by Kilbroney from Simper. A Solicitor-General

Home Secretary, a two-year-old colt by Solicitor-General from the Moonee Valley Cup winner Homedale, by Rosendale. won his first race at Mentone early this month, and impressed the critics. Home Secretary was sold at the Trentham sales in 1939. and fetched 650gns.

Race Call Race Call, an acceptor on the first day at-Wingatui, is owned by Mrs M. Casey, of Hawera, and is trained there by L. E. George. He is being brought south by Mrs J. Campbell, and on his return to Riccartbn will be trained by A. S. Ellis, who will also have Race Away, also owned by Mrs Casey, to prepare for the Banks Peninsula meeting and the Easter meeting at Riccarton. Norseman

Norseman shows a scar on his off hind leg about,, midway between the stifle and the hock, where he got galloped , on when racing at Gore! The trouble is said to have been caused by a young rider in the race pulling his mount about and running into Norseman. Beyond the signs of impact. Norseman has thrown off the temporary soreness, and galloped well on Saturday morning. A Fine Filly A. McDonald is handling a wellgrown and shapely filly by Paper Money from Bonnie Lake. She sports a considerable amount of white on each leg and a spot on the forehead. Bonnie Lake is also the dam of Mobile and Beaulah, the dam of Janet Gaynor. Bonnie Lake was got by Sunny Lake from Droski, by Stepniak from Whirlpool, and traces to the successful Mermaid taproot. It is intended to engage the filly liberally in New Zealand and Australia. Paper Money has been at the stud a good number of years, and some of his latest stock suggest that the son of Greenback retains a remarkable vitality. Australian Champions The win of High Caste in the C. F. Orr Stakes at Williamstown would be well anticipated, as he has been showing much mare brilliance lately than he did in the spring. He played with his field in his recent win in the'Challenge Stakes'at Randwick. though they were a smart lot, and before going to Melbourne he ran five furlongs in Imin Isec. E. Bartle. who rides High Caste, has also ridden Ajax and Peter Pan, two of Australia’s greatest horses, so that he is in a position to know just how good is High Caste. Bartle rates him the equal of this pair. He had his opinion vindicated when High Caste, though pushed to run a track record beat both Manrico and Ajax. Reports from the training tracks show that there is nothing wrong with the condition of Ajax, though he was having his first race for a long time. In his trial for the Orr Stakes he had the privilege of galloping over the course proper, and he covered the full distance of the race. He ran the seven furlongs in Imin 24 4-ssec, one of the best gallons of his career. He ran right up to this trial in the race, but High Caste was too good and registered Imin 231 sec. The race also showed what a good horse Manrico has developed into. There will be some first-class racing in Australia this autumn. TROTTING NOTES FIXTURES By Sentinel February 24.—Kaikoura T.C. Dissatisfied with Handicapping Full endorsement to a proposal from the executive of the Auckland Trotting Owners, Trainers, and Breeders’ Association to hold a conference with representatives of the Canterbury. Waikato, and West Coast (5.1.) associations on the handicapping system was given at a general meeting held in the Auckland Trotting Club’s luncheon room at Alexandra Park recently. Mr E. C. Webberley, in the unavoidable absence of the president. Mr C. Cowan presided over a large attendance. The secretary outlined the various proposals put before the Handicapping Committee of the New Zealand Trotting Association on the question, and which had not been accepted. The executive had the assurance of the support of the Canterbury body in the request for reform of the system, and with this in

view was of the opinion that concerted action by .all associations would probably meet with better results. The secretary made it clear that it was not thp work of the handicappers that was being criticised, but the system to which they ware restricted. Members

agreed that the executive had made earnest endeavours to have several matters put on a sounder basis, and unanimously decided that' steps be taken to enlist the support of the other associations. At the conclusion of the business, members and representatives of trotting clubs in the Auckland district were the guests of the executive at a very successful social function. at which Mr Cowan presided. Delegates of the various clubs paid a warm tribute to the fine work of the association in furthering the interests of trotting generally.
