RACING IN AUSTRALIA
THE ST. GEORGE STAKES HIGH CASTE BEATS AJAX (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) MELBOURNE, Feb. 18. (Received Feb. 18, at 10 p.m.) High Caste again proved his superiority over Ajax at Caulfield to-day, when he beat the latter in the last stride in a dazzling finish in the St. George Stakes. He also settled arguments whether last Saturday’s race between this great pair was a true reflex of Ajax’s merits. High Caste has now won £18,500, Ajax £33,700. The chief results were:— OAKLEIGH PLATE, Of £ 1500. Five furlongs and a-half. Unishak, 8.0 (Mornement) .. .. 1 Pamelus, 9.8 (Skidmore) 2 Chatsbury, 8.6 (Ralph) .. .. /.. 3 Eighteen started. Won by a length, with one length and a-quarter between second and third. Bursary was fourth. Gold Salute was nearly last. Manrico was eighth. Time, Imin s£sec. BOND HANDICAP, One mile and three furlongs. Plymouth Hoe, 9.2 (Creighton) .. 1 Gladstone, 7.3 (Ptirtell) 2 Royal Jubilee, 9.2 (Dewhurst) .. .3 Fifteen started. Won by a neck, with two lengths and a-half between second and third. Time, 2min IS^sec. ST. GEORGE STAKES, One mile and a furlong. High Caste, 8.3 (Bartle) .. .. .. 1 Ajax, 9.2 (Badger) 2 Reading, 8.3 (Shean) 3 - Twelve started, including Round Up. Approaching the three furlong post High Caste and Landlaw were the leaders, but Ajax went to the front and led into the straight and looked like winning. High Caste, however, finished with great determination and got up on the inside to beat Ajax by a head. Reading was a neck behind Ajax, and Rivette was fourth. Round Up was ninth. .Time, Imin 51sec. The Warrien Hurdle Handicap was won by the Lord Quex gelding Glenlonan, from Imitari and Napoleon.
