THE CONSCRIPTION ISSUE
10 IHE EDITOR Sir, —Irrespective of our personal views on the above subject, 1 do think that the question of New Zealand’s adoption of conscription' should be dropped and that all should wholeheartedly join in making our voluntary system a success. There is no doubt that so much talk about conscription is hindering recruiting, many going the length (with a view to forcing the hand of the Government) of advising our young men not to join up till conscription is adopted. New Zealand, like the other British dominions, has adopted the voluntary system. I feel I would be rendering a disservice to the British Empire if by word or action I did anything to prevent the voluntary system being made a success. While not wishing to cast any reflection on those who. for various reasons, did not join up for the last war under the voluntary system. I am sure the average returned soldier is proud of the fact that he volunteered for service, and would resent very much if it was suggested to him that he went only when he was forced to go. It seems almost certain that Canada and Australia will not adopt conscription. Surely it Is not going to be said to pur men that they went when they were forced to go. New Zealand I believe to be the most loyal of the British dominions. It should be considered a privilege to assist the Mother Country at the present time. ’ Our young men have been handed down a wonderful heritage, and are not lacking in courage. The New Zealand Division in the last war was one of the best in the British Army, and I feel sure that our men will see that the New Zealand Division now in the making will surpass anything that has ever left these shores. —I am. etc. J, McCrae, Dunedin. February 17.
