CENTENNIAL SPORTS
SUCCESSFUL MEETING
SPECTACULAR MARCH PAST WELL VARIED PROGRAMME SOME EXCITING FINISHES Over 2000 spectators attended the first function on the Otago centennial celebrations programme—the centennial sports meeting, which was held in fine weather at the Caledonian Ground on Saturday afternoon. A wide variety of events provided those present with plenty of entertainment, and the lengthy programme was put through expeditiously by a competent band of-officials. The Dunedin Highland Pipe Band and the Kaikorai Band were in attendance, and added to the success of the afternoon with much-en-joyed selections. Prior to the official opening ceremony by the Mayor (Mr A. H. Allen), a march past of athletes, cyclists, dancers, and wrestlers, headed by the Dunedin Pipe Band, made an impressive sight, and illustrated , the high standard of physical fitness prevailing among the young men and women of Otago.
Declaring the meeting open, the Mayor said that it was fitting on the corqpletion of the first 100 years of New Zealand’s history to pause and take stock of all that had happened since the signing of the Treaty, of Waitangi. It was appropriate, too, to make good resolutions for the future. Mr Alien reminded those present ,of the forethought of the pioneers in providing so many sports grounds in the city. The Caledonian Ground was once part of the foreshore, and. had it not been for the forethought of the pioneers in laying' it, aside as a sports' ground, the meeting could not have been held there to-day, Mr Allen congratulated those taking part in the march past on their appearance and bearing. He then declared the centennial meeting open.
Spectators could have had no cause for disappointment in any of the track events, for exciting finishes and large fields were the order throughout. Many outstanding performances were recorded in the men’s and women’s track events, including those of H. J. Tyrie (Civil Service) in winning the 220 Yards and 440 Yards in 23 3-ssec and 50- l-ssec respectively, L. Dickison (St. Kilda) in recording 4mjn 27 1- in the ; Mile, and Miss E: Nauman in winning her heat of - the 220 Yards Women’s Handicao in 27 4-ssec. In the field section. G. Byers was the most successful competitor with three wins, but one of the best performances was that of L. Fagg (North Otago) in clearing 10ft lOin in the Pole Vault. The cycling events were well contested and produced exciting finishes. E. Boyd had a successful afternoon and Won all three events in excellent style. Large entries were received for the dancing competitions and especially for the juvenile events. In the higher sections the standard was particularly good and the judge expressed general satisfaction with the displays of those In all events. The track was in fast condition, but the attempt on the record failed, the official time being given as 17min 17 4-ssec. Pullar’s time was 4min 21 l-ssec, Allen’s 4min 19 2-ssec, Matthews’s 4min 18sec. and Boot’s 4min 18Jsec. Pullar’s slowness placed a heavy handicap on the other runners, but Boot made a desperate attempt as the last man but found the effort in the last half-mile too great. He did the quarter-mile in 60sec and the half-mile in 2min ssec.

PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES
SAWING AND CHOPPING EVENTS DISPLAYS BY EXPERT AXEMEN FINAL DAY’S RESULTS ' tpER United Press Association) WELLINGTON. Feb. 18. It was the unanimous opinion of the 3000 spectators who assembled to see the second and concluding day of the New Zealand Athletic, Cycling and Axemen’s Union’s Centennial Championship meeting at the Basin Reserve yesterday afternoon that better entertainment has not been placed before the Wellington public for a long time Although the leading cyclists and runners of the Dominion provided many exciting contests, it was the spectacular work of the champion axemen which thrilled the crowd. It was something new for city dwellers to see expert axemen swinging their implements with power and precision and causing hugh chips to fly off the poplar' logs. s Little less thrilling were the sawing competitions, in which the brawny competitors literally made the saws hum through the logs. How expert New Zealand axemen are was proved by the display" of jigger chopping given by A. Curtain (Walpawa) and A. •£, Olliver, and .of jigger sawing by C. T. Organ (Wanganui) and J. D. Goodin (Pahiatua). In these demonstrations the men had to take 15-feet-high poplar trees to reach the block at the top. They had to cut niches in the trunk of the trees in which to insert the board or jigger. Climbing upon this board, they then had to work their way up by the same process until they reached the top, when they made dbe chips and sawdust fly. Cyclists and runners were handicapped by the slow track _ and the fairly stiff northerly wind. Christchurch riders took most of , the, prize money in the cycling events, J H. Newlove being in fine form. W. Pratney, a Maori rider from Manurewa, however, stole a march on the South Islanders in the Mile Championship. Finding an opening halfway through the last lap, he darted through to win comfortably. Newlove and D. A. Morland (Sumner), in trying to get through the same gap, collided and fell. Morland was recompensed for his spill by winning the Five-mile Points Scratch Race. In the running events, the Mile Championship was won by W. Preston (Paihia) off 50 yards. He covered the distance in 4min 25 I-ssec. The Half-mile Championship was carried off by D. E. Flanagan (Christchurch) im the good time of 2min 1 2-ssec, and the 220 Yards Championship saw L. A. Bench (Christchurch) take the honours from H. W. Milne (Gore). After the championships had been decided, the Mayor of Wellington (Mr T. C. A. Hislop) handed out .the sashes to the winners.
