AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS SUCCESS OF WAIKATO PLAYERS (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, Feb. 18. The outstanding feature pf the final day’s play in the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association’s annual provincial championship tournament yesterday was the success achieved by players representing the Waikato Association. Apart from J. W. Gunn, of Auckland, who partnered Miss M. Beverley in winning the Mixed Doubles event, all the senior finals were won by players from the Waikato. The North Auckland Association shared in the minor titles. Miss W. Smith, of Kaihoke. winning the Intermediate Girls’ Singles, and her brother. P. Smith, the Junior Boys Singles. Miss M. Beverley, of Matamata. again won three titles, the Ladies’ Singles for the fourth year in succession, the Ladies’ Doubles with her sister Miss N. Beverley, and the Mixed Doubles with Gunn. The following are the senior champions for 1940: Men’s Singles.—J. Roach- (Hamilton). Ladies’ Singles.—Miss M. Beverley (Matamata). Men’s Doubles. —D. Livingstone and J. Roach (Hamilton). An exhibition match was played between Bromwich and Crawford, each winning a set. They left later for Sydney. AUSTRALIAN PLAYERS EXHIBITION AT TIMARU (Per United Press Association) TIMARU. Feb. 17. The Australian women lawn tennis players and R. Barnes visited South Canterbury to-day. playing exhibition matches and treating a large gallery to fine displays. The outstanding game of the afternoon "was the Singles between A. D. Brown, former New Zealand Davis Cup player, and Barnes the New South Wales junior. Both played brilliantly. Brown’s greater experience being the deciding factor. In Mixed Doubles later Barnes showed great form at the net. Results: — Miss Coyne beat Miss Wynne 3 —6. 6 — l, 6 — 4. A. D. Brown beat R.
