Some interesting features of highway construction in Siam were revealed to the district public works engineer (Mr F. Langbein) by a Siamese engineer at present on a visit to New Zealand. Ho said that Bangkok, with a population of 700,000, was only three feet above sea level. Roads, therefore, had to be built from three fest to five feet above the surrounding country, the excavation of material from each side of the road resulting in the formation of canals. The roads were mostly two chains wide, and required a considerable amount of labour for upkeep. One of the greatest problems was caused by the fastgrowing vegetation on each side of the road. One man was kept going almost continuously cutting down trees over a mile stretch. If you require a qualified man to: a vacancv on vour‘ staff, call for applications ton the position.
