BANNOCKBURN Horticultural Show The Bannockburn Horticultural • Society’s annual show attracted the large number of 617 entries, and was from all points of view a most successful fixturfe. The McGrath Cup, for most points in the show, was won by Mrs Dewar with 65, next in order being Mrs Crombie, with 48. Muriel Swann gained the prize for most points in the section for zinnias. Jean Menzies Was the most successful competitor in the children’s section, and Mary Lawrence in the junior section. LAWRENCE Red Cross Society Over 30 women were present at a meeting on Friday afternoon, when it was resolved to form, a branch of the Red Cross Society. The Mayoress (Mrs R. F. Batchelor) presided. The Tuapeka County Patriotic Committee . wrote requesting assistance in the making of gloves for the Royal Air Force. It was decided to comply with the'request and to co-operate with the committee as far as possible. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mrs R. F. Batchelor; : vice-presidents—Mesdames G. H. Martin, W. Varcoe, S. Fletcher, C. Moyle, H. Winter, and R. C. Moore; secretary, Mrs R. North; treasurer. Miss E. Hart; committee —Mesdames T. H. Cark, E. A. Winchester, A. L. Stokes, M. Wetherall, W. G. McKinlay. M. E. Nicholls, Neilan, R, Walker, J. Anderson, E. Weatherall, and L. F. Hickman, and Misses M. Colgan, A. Nicholls, L. Hopkins, P. Haworth, and Stokes (2). -V It was resolved to hold fortnightly meetings on alternate Tuesdays in the Counci l Chambers. Personal
Mr E. C. Robson, of the local Post Office staff, is at present acting postmaster at Waitahuna. Miss G. Dwyer - ic spending her annual leave at Tapanui as the guest of Mrs J. A. Bowman. ALEXANDRA Weather Conditions , _ The weather still continues, to be unseasonable, and old residents consider it the worst' summer' they have fever experienced. The surrounding ranges are .covered with a good coating of snow, and on Monday morning a frost of three degrees was registered. , Rifle Shooting . f In the Alexandra Defence Rifle Club’s second and final shoot of NO. 4 Match the conditions were 15 counters and 1 optional sighteir. R. Forrest won the brooch after count back from, R. Henderson'. The best scores were:—R. Forrest 66—2—58. R. Henderson 66—2—68, W. Forrest 61—4 —65, R. G. Simpson 622 —64, L. A. Clark 58—4—62, J. Lunn 56—2—58. Flag Day Appeal The sale of flags met with an excellent response locally, and £4l 16b was collected. Bowling On Tuesday the Alexandra rink, skipped by T. E. Sunderland, retained the Jojly Cup against a Cromwell rink, skipped by G. Jelly, the , final score being 26—13. Bannockburn has the next challenge. Personal Mr artd Mrs L. Ryan have returned from an extended holiday in the Nbrth Island. Mrs W. R, Lloyd Williams and Mr R. Henderson left on Wednesday to spend a holiday in Timaru. The Rev. and Mrs West have left for Wellington, where Mr West will attend the Presbyterian Centennial Church Conference. ( v
