CHINESE CUP NORTHERN DEFEATS MOSGIEL The play-off for the Chinese Cup at Logan Park on Saturday was responsible for a thrilling game, and the many spectators were kept fully interested until the final whistle. Conditions were ideal for the game, which resulted in Northern securing the cup for the 1939 season, the score being 2—l. Northern was first on attack, a hot rally ending in McLean shooting past. Northern was playing excellent football and swinging the ball to advantage. A strong clearance by Gordon to McFarlane had Mosigel in trouble. King hitting the cross-bar from the cross. Stenhouse sent Nicholson away, but the latter shot over. Play swung upfield, McLean swinging out to the left then crossing for Reynolds to open the score with a fast drive from close m. Northern 1. Mosgiel nil. . Mosgiel forwards settled down to more combined play and Rogers, moving swiftly, sent out to Nicholson. Davidson missing an easy chance from a well-directed cross. Nicholson also failed badly later when well placed. A nice combined movement on Northern’s right ended in Hall punching over McFarlane’s cross. The corner was cleared to Gordon, who sent back to McFarlane, the latter shooting the ball across the goal mouth to go over. McLean at this stage was injured, but resumed later Anderson stopped what looked like a certain goal from a hot drive by Skinner and Steven missed from the rebound. Play was lively and. Mosgiel Was rewarded when. Nicholson sent across for Davidson to score, bringing the scores level. Northern 1, Mosgiel 1. Both sides had numerous opportunities to goal, but appeared to be over anxious. A strong shot by Reynolds grazed the upright and the half time whistle went with a hard tussle in Mosgiel’s goal. Skinner and Johnstone changed positions and the latter went strongly through but was robbed when, shooting, and Buchanan sent off Reynolds, who finished weakly with Mosgiel out of position. Stenhouse eventually cleared to Nicholson, who cut inside Anderson to test Gibson, without success. Rogers later drove a hard shot which a Northern defender stopped from going through, but the infringement passed unmolested and a comer was signalled, when time was called with the result: Northern .. 2 goals. ...
