THE Otago Daily Times. "Inveniam viam aut faciam." [Established November 15, 1861.] FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 1868.
According to the Westport Star of the 7th instant a young man, a clerk in one of the Auckland banks bought a share in a claim for £IOO. a few months back, and sold it the other day for £14,000. The aboriginal cricketers recently taken to England do not seem to have met with much success. The Pall Mall Gazette says: It is by this time clear that the aborigines are wretchedly bad players at cricket, and that they were merely brought over here as a speculation. The Dean of Sydney, the Rev, Mr Cowper, recently said of a celebrated pianist in that city that he was “ hopelessly drunk ’’ on the occasion of a musical entertainment. An action for slander was brought against the dean, but the case had not proceeded far when the plaintiff retired with a nonsuit. The Canterbury Acclimatisation Society has obtained a couple of native quail, captured by Mr Ollivier in the neighbourhood of Lake Linden. Unsuccessful attempts to procure these birds —once so numerous in the island —have been made during several years past. The New Zealand variety is much larger than either the English or Australian. and will therefore prove useful for purposes of exchange.
