“ SHIVERING IN FEAR” DAY OF RECKONING COMING A SECRET BROADCAST (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, Sept. 16. (Received Sept. 17, at 6.30 p.m.) “Do not believe Goebbels’s lies. All his boasting does not hide the fact of our oppressors’ shivering fear because they know now that they have lost (heir bloody game.” These were the words with which a woman announcer, in the name of the German freedom army, introduced a broadcast throughout Germany from a secret station. “ We Germans are starving in the towns and lying in the trenches while the Nazis strive for the maintenance of tyranny. But there will come a day before long when we will abolish starvation and war by abolishing tyranny. We a:re not strong enough yet, but we are becoming stronger every day. Let Hitler win his battles in Poland; we are winning ours in the queues where women are vainly waiting to get a few ounces of fat. We do not care whether it takes six months or six years. We know the victory is certain. Slaves are fighting for Hitler, but the German freedom army, which is the true army of the German people, will fight in alliance with the most powerful free men of the world.” The remainder of the speech was jammed out. ALLEGED GERMAN SPIES ARRESTED ON DUTCH VESSEL NEW YORK,' Sept. 16. (Received Sept. 17, at 9.30 p.m.) The Amsterdam correspondent of the United Press of America states that the British naval authorities arrested two alleged German spies while the Nieuw Amsterdam was off the Downs. They also detained a “ Jewish refugee,” who proved to be the agent through whom 1500 tons of copper aboard the liner was purchased in the United States. The British authorities allege that, although the copper was consigned to Dutch firms, it was eventually destined for Germany. Thirty-four German members of the crew were arrested and interned. The vessel was held up for three days and a-half while the passengers were questioned and the cargo was examined. Britain obtained from the Netherlands Government an agreement to assume the title of the copner and compensate the firms to which it was consigned.
