THE SESSION
END EXPECTED THIS WEEK WAR FINANCE MEASURES KEEN DEBATE PROBABLE (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Sept. 17. Unless anything unforeseen occurs, it is expected that the present session of Parliament will finish by the end of the week There is an evident desire by all Ministers and to lesser degree by other members to have th§ business of the session concluded as soon as possible, and the general opinion is that next Friday or, at the latest, Saturday will see the closing down of Parliament for this year. .Whatever happens, the week is bound to be a busy one, especially towards the end. Legislation which is admitted to be controversial will be introduced on Tuesday or Wednesday bearing on the financing of New Zealand’s war effort as a unit of the British Commonwealth of Nations and this alone is bound to cause a great deal of argument as it is not likely to come under the more or less '*truce" conditions that have obtained in the past week or so between the Government and the Opposition. Apart from the war legislation, it is probable that the House will be asked to deal with sundry other Bills which have been scheduled for some time. Among these, according to a statement made on Friday by the Minister of Finance (Mr W Nash) is an amendment to the income tax law removing certain anomalies. It seems that advantage will also be taken of the working mooc the House has been in lately to dispose of various minor measures that have been hanging fire for some time.
