SOUTH OTAGO
BALCLUTHA Personal Mr A. Dawson, postmaster at Balclutha, is on annual leave, and his place is being filled by Mr A. W. Swap, relieving officer from the General Post Office, Wellington. Golden Sands Two beach claims in the vicinity of Kaka Point continue to be worked, with, it is understood, fairly satisfactory results. High tides have exposed considerable belts of black sand, which, when passed through a sluice-box, yields a fair percentage of fine gold, equal to " more than tucker," as one old-timer remarked. One of the claims is owned and operated by a lady. Disorderly Conduct Several charges of disorderly behaviour in public and damaging a police uniform are to be heard at Owaka Court to-morrow before Mr H. J. Dixon, S.M. Coursing The Vice-president's Cup will be competed for at the local Plumpton on Saturday. It is open to members of the South Otago Club. • . The Police Committee of the Corporation of the City of London proposes to buy a portable gas chamber in connection with the training of members of the City of London police force in anti-gas measures.
