THE GEELONG OUTRAGE AN OPEN VERDICT RETURNED (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) MELBOURNE, Sept. 15. (Received Sept. 15, at 11.15 p.m.) An open finding was recorded by the coroner at an inquiry into the death of Mrs Aimee Milne, the victim of the bomb explosion which wrecked Plain-clothes Constable Milne's home at Geelong on July 13. MAILS FOR NEW YORK SYDNEY, Sept. 15. (Received Sept. 16, at 1 a.m.) The Postal Department, in view of the curtailment of the Union Company's trans-Pacific service on October 22, is making arrangements to despatch mail matter to New York via the Australia to London airlines and the trans-Pacific shipping lines. Thus letters posted in Sydney will reach New York in 20 days, compared with 21 days by Matson and Union mail liners as at present. SOUTH AUSTRALIAN BUDGET ADELAIDE, Sept. 15. (Received Sept. 16, at 1 a.m.) The Premier (Mr R. L. Butler), in delivering the Budget to-night, announced his intentior to reduce the taxation rates, giving relief to the extent of £106,000. A NEW DESTROYER CANBERRA, Sept. 15. (Received Sept. 16, at 1 a.m.) The Minister for Defence (Mr R. A. Parkhill) announced that the Commonwealth Government was building a large destroyer comparable with a light cruiser in effectiveness, at a cost of £BOO,OOO. The construction will be carried out at Cockatoo dockyard, Sydney. FISHERIES INVESTIGATION CANBERRA, Sept. 15.
(Received Sept. 16, at 1.30 a.m.) The Prime Minister (Mr J. A. Lyons) announced that Dr Harold Thompson, director of fisheries in Newfoundland, had been appointed for five years to take charge of Commonwealth fisheries investigation. Dr Thompson, whose salary <s £IOOO a year, will arrive in Australia at the end of January.
