NOTES FROM AUCKLAND

(Special to Dailv Times; AUCKLAND, Sept. 15. In spite of the fact that the tracks in the various training centres were heavy, some interesting work was performed this morning oy horses with engagements at the Avondale Jockey Club's spring meeting, to be held on Saturday and Monday. The course proper, with the poles out 70 feet, was available at Ellerslie, and the best efforts were recorded by Avondale Cup candidates. On the course proper Mazir (Wiggins) and Horowhenua (Kearns) finished well clear of Te Hai (Manson) at the conclusion of a mile in lmin 52sec, the first half in 54sec and the last half in 56sec. Mazir made the most of the running, but Horowhenua ran up to him in the straight and appeared to be going the stronger at the finish. Te Hai was not bustled, and could have done b'etter. Horowhenua has been working consistently well. Mazir's effort was very satisfactory, but his Avondale Cup chance would be improved if he had a little longer to prepare. Knight of Australia (Wiggins) finished very resolutely at the end of a round in 2min 17 2-ssec, and was lengths ahead of Tybalt (Tremain), who took 2min 18 l-ssec. Knight of Australia ran the last seven furlongs in lmin 41 l-ssee, and the last four in 59 l-ssec. He is in great heart, and should ihake a forward showing on Saturday. Tybalt was allowed to loaf at the finish, and he is a very lazy worker if not urged. His condition has improved a good deal since he ran at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting. Lord Val (Goldfinch) and Master Brierly (Wiggins) were responsible for a sound effort oven seven furlongs m lmin 39 2-ssec, the first four in 56sec and the last three in 43 2-ssec. Lord Val is very fit, and was running on very strongly. Master Brierly also went satisfactorily, and is steadily improving in condition, although he may require a little more time to become thoroughly attuned. Mainland covered four furlongs in 58 l-ssec. She appears to have gone on' the right way since running fourth in the Sylvia Park Handicap at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting; and should have a good opportunity to open her winning account in the novice events at Avondale. Versant (Holland) " worked solidly, but was not timed. He is bright and muscular, and will disappoint if he fails to race better at Avondale than he did at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting, where he was never dangerous in the open sprint. On the two-year-old track Bowyang (Goldfinch) sprinted three furlongs nicely in 35 3-ssec. He is well forward, and is a nice mover with a good turn of speed. Harlech (Murray; ran two furlongs in 26 3-ssec. Although not as forward as Bowyang Harlech is showing steady improvement.

The course proper, 60 feet out, was used at Te Rapa. Silver Briar was not extended to complete a circuit in 2min 17 3-ssec. Le Chasseur and Sergia were associated over six furlongs, and finished on terms in lmin 25sec. a good effort considering the conditions. They ran their first half mile in 56sec. Lucidus, who returned from Wanganui in great heart, worked freely on the inner grass. Prince Acre was also restricted to strong pace work. He is looking well. Sinking Fund was just in front of Sir Tommy at the end of five furlongs in lmin lOsec. The latter went pleasingly for a hack. The two-year-old Penzance, by Raceful from Lady Lois, dashed over two furlongs along the back in 24sec. Tradesman, accompanied by Red Fox over the first seven furlongs, was clocked to compass a circuit in 2min 16sec. Considering the fact that he was held back to his companion in the initial stages the effort was sound. L. J. Ellis has been engaged to ride him at Avondale, and N. R. M'Kenzie will ride Red Fox. The flags were out 35 feet on the course proper at Te Awamutu. and the going was heavy. Gallio worked well over five furlongs in lmin 7£sec. He looks much imDroved since his trip to Wanganui. Galilee was allotted half a mile, which took 56£sec. Jonathan went seven furlongs comfortably in lmin 41sec. Sweet Rose, who went from a standing start, completed six furlongs in lmin 22sec. the last five taking lmin Bsec. Girl Pat ran two furlongs against the rails, taking 24 3-ssec. The gallops at Te Aroha were on the course proper, on which the flags were 70 feet out. Gay Rose moved attractively over two circuits. Lagoon (Preston), who was practically at her best, defeated King Musk (K'eesing) bv two leneths over seven furlongs in lmin 37 2-ssec. Mungacre beat Bonnv Song over hve furlongs in lmin 7 2-ssec.
