PORT CHALMERS NEWS
FAREWELL TO COUNCILLOR The Mayor of Port Chalmers (Mr T. Scollay) and members of the Borough Council met on Monday evening for the purpose of bidding farewell to Cr T. F. Mackie, who is about to leave the district. The Mayor spoke of his long association with Cr Mackie, and stated that he had served two four-year terms on the council and had taken an active part in the affairs of the borough. He had also been a member of the Port Chalmers Fire Board, and had been actively interested in the sport of rowing. On behalf of the people of Port Chalmers, he asked Cr Mackie to accept a framed minute, which read as follows: — "To Cr T. F. Mackie,—On the eve of your departure from Port Chalmers, we, the undersigned members of the Port Chalmers Borough Council, desire to extend to you the grateful thanks of the council for the many years of faithful service rendered by you in the interest of the citizens as a councillor. You have carried out the varied duties of Deputy Mayor, chairman of the Finance Committe, chairman of the Works Committee, and councillor, also as the council's representative on the Port Chalmers Fire Board, with distinctive ability, and the assistance you have rendered the council is highly valued. The interest taken by you in the welfare of various organisations in the town was such as to earn you the esteem of your fellow-citizens. In particular, we would mention your work on the Otago Rowing Association as a selector and committeeman, and on the Otago Regatta Committee, on both of which bodies you gave invaluable service. This minute is presented to you as a token of appreciation of your services to the borough,' and we wish you every success and prosperity in the future." The members of the council each spoke briefly expressing their good wishes for Cr Mackie's future prosperity and happiness, and the town clerk (Mr C. Blackman) and the borough engineer (Mr F. J. Williams) also spoke. In reply, Cr Mackie gave an assurance of his continued interest in the welfare of the town in which he had spent so many years of his life, and expressed the hope that the municipal activities, in which he was keenly interested, would continue to prosper. PROGRESSIVE LEAGUE At a meeting of the Port Chalmers Progressive League several matters of local interest were dealt with, and it was decided to seek the co-operation of the member for the district (Mr A. Campbell) in an endeavour to have an automatic telephone sub-exchange provided for Port Chalmers, similar to that recently installed at Lyttelton. Mirams; committeeMessrs J. Watson, J. D. Morgan, R. Bews, W. G. Love, F. C. Smith, W. Mathewson and A. Bell.
