LANARKSHIRE MINERS
THE STAY-IN STRIKERS MANY BROUGHT TO SURFACE LONDON, Sept. 13. As the result of a huge demonstration, 30,000 Lanarkshire miners were instructed to launch a one-day strike on the 14th inst. to protest against the treatment of stay-in strikers at William Dixon and Co.'s Blantyre colliery, whose manager (Mr Ritchie) refused to allow food to be sent down. Twenty of 54 underground strikers have been already brought to the surface as the result of illness and other causes. Those brought up at the week-end were all unconscious, and were sent home by ambulances. The remainder, who had been without food since the 10th, were compelled to drink dirty sump water. MEN RETURN TO SURFACE LONDON, Sept. 14. (Received Sept. 14, at 10.15 p.m.) The Blantyre stay-in strikers returned to the surface yesterday and were greeted with cheers by 5000 sympathisers, who walked to the pit gates and carried them home shoulder high. The men stated that they were forced to surrender owing to the failure of the pit lights. They maintained their spirits underground by singing to the accompaniment of a tin can band. One said; “ Seven slices of.bread are all that I have had since Thursday.”
